Imagine your street becoming several degrees cooler simply because more trees are growing around it. 🌳

Singapore is working toward planting one million more trees by 2030 through its OneMillionTrees movement.

Research from the National University of Singapore has found that even relatively small patches of urban forest can have a measurable cooling effect. Researchers studying a forest patch near City Square Mall found that nearby areas could be up to 5°C cooler.

Another NUS study by researchers Simone Fatichi and Naika Meili, presented at the 2026 European Geosciences Union General Assembly, found that urban trees could reduce air-conditioning energy use by 6–9% in humid cities such as Singapore.

That means trees aren’t just making streets look greener.

They can provide shade, reduce heat exposure, and potentially lower the amount of energy buildings need for cooling.

In a hot, densely built city, a tree canopy becomes more than landscaping.

It becomes part of the city’s natural cooling system.

Sometimes one of the simplest ways to make a city more comfortable is also one of the oldest:

Plant more trees.

As of September 1, 2024, Japan has more than 95,000 citizens aged 100 or older, with the number reaching 95,119. This marks the 54th consecutive year that the number of centenarians has increased. Nearly 88% of them are women, reflecting global longevity patterns. Experts highlight Japan’s world-class healthcare, nutrient-rich diet, active lifestyles, and tight-knit communities as key factors behind this impressive longevity.

So, what can others take from Japan’s example?
Stay active every day—walk, stretch, or engage in light sports.
Foster strong connections with family and friends; don’t isolate or get lost in the digital world.
Follow a whole food, plant-based diet with some fish if preferred, and avoid highly processed foods. Variety is key!
Embrace fun, keep learning, and enjoy your time. 🌿👵

This staircase looks more like sculpture than architecture.

Architect Pierre Debeaux descending the geometric stairs of Villa Pradier in Lavaur, France, 1978. Designed by Debeaux between 1974 and 1978, the house turned even everyday movement into part of its architecture.
