On This Day in Disney History: December 21
Today, we remember the day we lost Leota Toombs Thomas (1925–1991) to cancer—34 years ago today—a pioneering Disney Imagineer whose face and spirit live on in one of the most iconic attractions ever created.

Starting as a teenager in Disney's Ink and Paint department in 1940, Leota contributed to classic animation before joining Imagineering in the 1960s. She helped bring magic to life in attractions like It's a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Haunted Mansion.

But her most famous role? Lending her likeness (and voice for "Little Leota") to the floating head of Madame Leota in the Haunted Mansion's séance room. Every time you hear "Serpents and spiders, tail of a rat... call in the spirits, wherever they're at," you're seeing Leota herself!

Posthumously honored as a Disney Legend in 2009, her legacy continues through her daughter, Imagineer Kim Irvine.

Thank you, Leota, for the timeless magic. 💫🕯️❤️
