The KCDYC had an amazing experience last week at the 39th annual United National Youth Conference (UNITY) in Washington, DC that over 1,500 youth attended from over 23 tribes. The members who attended were able to attend workshops and listen to guest speakers who focused on UNITY’s mission to, “foster the spiritual, mental, physical and social development of American Indian and Alaska Native youth, and to help build a strong, unified and self-reliant Native America through involvement of its youth.” They were able to listen to Minister Louis Farrakhan, Nation of Islam, actor Adam Beach, Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ), Kevin Washburn, Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs at the United States Department of the Interior, and William Mendoza, White House Initiatives on American Indian and Alaska Native Education. We also enjoyed the partnership that was made with unity and N7 to allow us to meet Jackie Blackbird and Alvina Begay. We are excited for the 40th annual conference which will be held in Oklahoma City! One of our members was also elected as the southwest region representative for the UNITY executive committee, congrats Kenaba Hatathlie!
