Project Spotlight: First 90 Days on Antipsychotics
The team is exploring the experiences of individuals during the first 90 days after starting antipsychotic medication, a critical period that can influence treatment continuity and recovery. Through this study, we hope to better understand the challenges and support systems that shape early treatment experiences and identify opportunities to strengthen mental health care delivery.

We celebrate Sophie Waimon, a Project and Research Coordinator at ETH, whose journey continues to inspire us.

Sophie first joined ETH as a fellow during GHEF 2023, and later returned in 2025 to conduct her MPH research on “Family planning decision-making in rural Uganda”. This earned her Second Place Overall at the Graduate Research Symposium at the Bursky School of Public Health at WashU in St. Louis on 27th February 2026.

She continued working with ETH for her practicum, where her exceptional initiative and independent leadership in applied global health earned her the Practicum Excellence Award at the Bursky School of Public Health at WashU in St. Louis on 13th May 2026.

We are proud to celebrate Sophie’s achievements and her continued contribution to advancing global health research and practice.

Last week, we were honored to welcome Camryn, one of the major supporters behind the Mpunde Education Initiative to Mpunde. She was joined by Noah, Elisabeth, and John Chaney, whose continued support has also been instrumental in bringing the vision of Empower Primary School to life.

During their visit, the team met with a range of stakeholders across Buyende District, including local leaders, parents, headteachers from neighboring schools, the District Education Officer, and the Resident District Commissioner. These conversations highlighted the strong community partnership and shared commitment behind the project.

The team also visited Empower Primary School and was encouraged by the progress of the construction, including the completed classroom painting and installation of blackboards.

What began as an idea has continued to grow through collaboration, trust, and the dedication of many people working together to expand access to quality education in Mpunde.

Driven by our commitment to bridging the healthcare gap in Buyende District, Mpunde Health Center conducted an outreach this month, providing cervical cancer immunization for 10-year-old girls, a critical step in protecting them early against HPV and reducing the risk of cervical cancer later in life. We also offered deworming services to both boys and girls, helping prevent infections that can affect growth, nutrition, and overall well-being.

Every child reached is a step toward a healthier, safer future.
Prevention today. Protection for a lifetime.

A New Milestone for the Mpunde Education Initiative

We’re excited to share that we’ve now completed the major painting work in the classrooms and have installed the blackboards, bringing the space to life as a place for learning.

With each step, we’re getting closer to creating a welcoming and inspiring environment for our future students in Mpunde.

Next steps: Finishing the painting work, flooring and furnishing the classrooms.

Access to specialized mental health care remains limited in many rural communities, and misdiagnosis can delay the right treatment and recovery. At Mpunde Health Centre, our team is working to change that, one patient at a time.

Story from our Psychiatric Clinical Officer:

“I received a female patient from a nearby community who had been misdiagnosed with epilepsy at another health center and prescribed carbamazepine, with no improvement. When I clerked and took the patient’s history at our clinic, I diagnosed Bipolar I Disorder and prescribed haloperidol and carbamazepine for one month.

At follow-up, she had significantly improved. The family was very happy with the progress and brought a chicken as a token of appreciation. I am happy that Mpunde Health Centre continues to be a source of hope for people in need, and I am glad to be part of the team seeing these changes happen in the community"

Stories like this highlight how essential skilled staffing is in reducing misdiagnosis and expanding access to equitable mental health services.
