Menstrual Dignity Program at Mpunde Muslim Primary School

As the 2026 Global Health Experiential Fellowship came to an end, our GHEF fellows and ETH staff came together for an outreach through the Menstrual Dignity Program (MDP) at Mpunde Muslim Primary School.

During the outreach, 115 reusable menstrual pads were distributed to school-going girls, helping support their ability to manage their periods with dignity and confidence. The team also held an awareness session with 47 boys, opening up conversations about menstruation and challenging the stigma and misconceptions that can surround it.

We are grateful to our fellows and ETH team for making this outreach possible and for continuing to promote menstrual dignity and inclusive health education in the Mpunde community.

After a series of engaging online orientation sessions, we are excited to officially welcome the second cohort of the Global Health Equity Fellowship (GHEF)

This week marks the beginning of an immersive learning journey as our fellows transition from virtual preparation to on-the-ground experiences. Over the coming weeks, they will engage with local communities, collaborate with health professionals and researchers, and gain firsthand insight into the realities of global health in Uganda.

We look forward to the meaningful learning, cultural exchange, and lasting partnerships that will grow throughout this fellowship.

Shared Clinical Learning Week is currently underway for our second GHEF cohort at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.

Throughout the week, fellows are shadowing medical personnel in the hospital, rotating through clinical departments, sharing perspectives, and gaining firsthand experience of healthcare delivery in a low-resource setting.

Beyond the clinical experience, participants are engaging in daily reflections and discussions that encourage them to think critically about health systems, health equity, and the role of context in patient care.

We are excited to see the conversations, connections, and learning that this week continues to inspire as our participants grow together.

Project Spotlight: First 90 Days on Antipsychotics
The team is exploring the experiences of individuals during the first 90 days after starting antipsychotic medication, a critical period that can influence treatment continuity and recovery. Through this study, we hope to better understand the challenges and support systems that shape early treatment experiences and identify opportunities to strengthen mental health care delivery.

We celebrate Sophie Waimon, a Project and Research Coordinator at ETH, whose journey continues to inspire us.

Sophie first joined ETH as a fellow during GHEF 2023, and later returned in 2025 to conduct her MPH research on “Family planning decision-making in rural Uganda”. This earned her Second Place Overall at the Graduate Research Symposium at the Bursky School of Public Health at WashU in St. Louis on 27th February 2026.

She continued working with ETH for her practicum, where her exceptional initiative and independent leadership in applied global health earned her the Practicum Excellence Award at the Bursky School of Public Health at WashU in St. Louis on 13th May 2026.

We are proud to celebrate Sophie’s achievements and her continued contribution to advancing global health research and practice.
