Saturday, April 6 south bound Slater will be closed from NE 124th Street and NE 120th for removal of a crane. Per the City of Kirkland:
The Saturday 4/6 closure is related to the development on the northwest corner of NE 120th St and Slater Ave NE (Slater MU project LSM21-05890). Closure of the southbound lanes is a critical safety component as the developer’s contractor will be dismantling and removing their crane, and we will not allow traffic to drive underneath while that effort is underway.
Southbound Slater Ave will be closed between NE 124th St and NE 120th St, approximately a third of a mile. Note that the northbound direction will remain open. The detour route will take folks west along NE 124th St, and then south along 124th Ave NE, and the east along NE 120th St.

Kirkland’s Totem Lake Connector contractor is closing Totem Lake Boulevard from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., starting tonight and ending early Saturday morning. Join WSDOT for an online project update for the I-405 at NE 132nd St Interchange Project on July 20.

WSDOT is building a new on-ramp to northbound I-405 and a new off-ramp from southbound I-405 at Northeast 132nd Street in Kirkland. This project will improve access to the Totem Lake regional growth center and surrounding neighborhoods in Kirkland. It will also provide a new route to access I-405, creating an alternative to using local streets and helping reduce pressure on heavily congested nearby interchanges.

You’re invited to join an online project update to hear about progress made so far, learn more about the upcoming work, ask questions of the project team, and learn how to stay informed. This meeting will be held online via Zoom.

Wednesday, July 20, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

The annual Celebrate Kirkland! Parade returns Monday, July 4, 2022 to downtown Kirkland. The event is accepting applications for parade float entries and volunteers (age 16+). This year’s theme is “Celebrate Kirkland, Together Again”.

“We are thrilled to have this beloved Kirkland tradition back in person,” says Mayor Penny Sweet. “Being a volunteer or participating in the parade is a great way to meet new people and support the community. We need everyone’s involvement to make it a success. Whether you want to show off your float in the procession, volunteer to keep everyone safe and having fun, or come as a spectator – we want to see the whole community show up.”

The 4th of July Parade is a Kirkland tradition and fun for the whole family. The itinerary includes a kids’ decorating event at Marina Park Pavilion at 10:30 a.m., a kids’ walking parade at 11:30 a.m., and the Hometown Parade at 12 p.m.

“Remember, the children’s parade is open to all kids,” says Mayor Sweet. “Please join us starting at 10 a.m. in the Marina Park Pavilion to get yourself, your bikes, and your pets decorated and join in the parade!”

Those interested in volunteering can sign up with the Kirkland Downtown Association and email [email protected] for questions.

Those interested in driving a float in the parade can apply through the Kirkland Downtown Association and email [email protected] for questions.

The 4th of July is fast approaching - time to remind people that in Kirkland, fireworks are illegal – lighting them off, selling them or even having fireworks in your possession is against the law here. That includes sparklers and smoke bombs (yes, even those). In fact, sparklers are one of the leading causes of fireworks-related injuries.

Across the country last year, sparklers were the cause of 900 fireworks-related injuries, while firecrackers caused 1,600 injuries.

In 2020, the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office received 237 reports of injuries from fireworks and 360 reported fires due to fireworks, resulting in a loss of more than $1.3 million.

But all this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy fireworks on the 4th of July – just let the professionals handle them by going to a public fireworks show instead! Neighboring cities like Bellevue, Renton and Sammamish are all hosting fireworks shows this year, so you don’t have to miss seeing the night sky lit up on the 4th.

A couple more notes:
• If you need to dispose of any unused fireworks, call Kirkland Police at (425) 577-5656 and they’ll take care of them for you. If police see you with fireworks, they will seize them and give you a ticket, so don’t risk your safety - or your wallet!
• Stepping outside City limits to stealthily light fireworks also isn’t a good idea - this year is the first year that fireworks are banned across unincorporated King County.

Though Kirkland is not hosting 4th of July fireworks this year, we still have a day of fun planned with the parade and kids’ activities!
