Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The holiday was first observed after the American Civil War to honor and decorate the graves of Union soldiers who had died in the conflict. The name "Decoration Day" came from the practice of decorating the graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags.
It wasn't until 1971 that the holiday was officially recognized as Memorial Day and became a federal holiday to honor all American military personnel who have died in service to their country.
I give honor and gratitude to our fallen soldiers.
