Ten months later, we finally opened the Romanian Nutcracker photo vault.
Apparently, producing a Romanian Nutcracker, performing it to a sold-out house, and then recovering from it takes a little longer than we anticipated 🙂.
But looking through these photographs again, we remembered exactly why we did it.

Last year, we asked ourselves a very Datina question: "What if E.T.A. Hoffman were Romanian?" The result was one of the most ambitious productions Datina has ever created: Romanian folklore meeting a beloved Christmas classic, part folk performance, part theater, a tiny bit of ballet, but completely Datina.

And then you showed up, our beloved audience. ❤️ You filled the theater to the very last seat. Our performers gave it everything they had on that stage, and you gave it right back, with your warmth, your enthusiasm and your thunderous applause. You made every one of those months of hard work worth it.

Some days stay with you. Our day at the Maryhill Museum last weekend was one of them.

Under a beautiful September sun, surrounded by the spectacular Columbia River Gorge, Datina Folk Ensemble had the joy of celebrating 100 years of Maryhill Museum of Art and 100 years since Queen Marie of Romania first came to this remarkable place.
She left a piece of Romania here, and a hundred years later, we had the privilege of bringing a little piece of Romania back.

For one unforgettable afternoon, Romanian dance filled the grounds of Maryhill with music, color, movement, smiles, and an incredible amount of energy.
From the very first steps to the final bow, we saw all the dancers and singers light up on stage, and felt the warmth of an audience that embraced the performers and the celebration so generously.
We like to think that somewhere above us, Queen Marie was smiling.

Thank you to everyone who danced with us, cheered for us, applauded us, and shared in the joy of this beautiful day.

And a very special, heartfelt thank you to the incredible team of organizers behind this celebration. The enormous amount of work, care, and dedication that went into bringing this event to life was evident in every detail, and we are deeply grateful to have been part of something so beautifully done.

Thank you for an unforgettable evening.

Our hearts are still full.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us for "The Romanian Nutcracker" and for the incredible support you showed this production, from the very first announcement to the final curtain call. Seeing a sold-out house and nearly 500 people gathered to share this story with us was truly overwhelming and deeply humbling.

This show was built on curiosity, imagination, tradition, and a lot of trust that this story would resonate, that folklore could feel fresh, and that a re-envisioned Nutcracker could find a home in your hearts. Your presence, energy, and enthusiasm in the audience brought that vision fully to life.

Thank you for celebrating with us, for sharing the event with friends and family, and for filling the theater with warmth, joy, and winter magic.

Behind every magical moment on stage, there are people quietly making sure it lives on.

We are incredibly grateful to Marius Photography & Video, a local family-run photo & video team who are generously donating their time, talent, and equipment to capture our Romanian Reimagined Nutcracker. From rehearsals to curtain call, they are helping preserve not just images, but memories, effort, and love poured into this show by dancers of all ages.

Before the premiere of the Romanian Nutcracker, step into an enchanting visual experience: an exhibition of authentic, museum-quality Romanian folk costumes, curated by Doria, a Transylvanian-born collector of cultural textiles.

Remember when you said, “That was your best show yet”? It’s been two years since we last hit the stage, and we’ll admit, we’ve missed the thrill and even the panic that comes with it. So, we’ve slipped back into the rehearsal room and started stirring the pot again, cooking something beautiful, ambitious, with just the right amount of insane.
