🌲🌲 Celebrate urban forests during Green Kirkland Week: October 17 - 25, 2026 🌲🌲

Join in Green Kirkland Week, a celebration of the start of planting season, our native forest ecosystems, and the amazing volunteers who care for Kirkland’s natural area parklands.

Get involved! Find a volunteer stewardship event near you and pitch-in during this week of community and conservation. Whether you're planting, weeding, or mulching, your efforts help restore and protect our urban forests.

Everyone is welcome! Events are open to all ages following the youth and event guidelines on our webpage. No experience needed-tools, gloves, and training are provided.

On this Indigenous Peoples Day, FHNA acknowledges, with respect, that we are on the ancestral indigenous land of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Suqaumish Tribe, the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, the Snoqualimie Indian Tribe, and the Duwamish people.

Kirkland is on the land that was home for millennia to the 'Lake People.' This name in their language is Xacuabš (historically referred to as hah-choo-AHBSH).

Historical and local records highlight specific Xacuabš village sites in the Kirkland area, including Tabtabiux at Juanita Bay and Sa'tsakalh near Mercer Slough.

They lived by fishing, hunting, and managing the rich wetland and forest ecosystems, including cultivating wapato (Sagittaria latifolia) in shallow-water gardens.

Salmon was a primary cornerstone of their diet and culture.

Historically, Juanita Creek was a thriving salmon stream. Long before the lake's landscape was altered by European settlement, the creek saw rich, annual returns of migrating salmon.

- Keep chemicals out of storm drains.

Join us for fun forest stewardship work parties at the Juanita Woodlands — happening every Saturday from October 17th through November 28th!

Join with community to pull ivy and plant native plants in this beautiful forest. Help restore habitat, enjoy snacks, treats and coffee, and make new friends.

Where: Juanita Woodlands Park, Juanita Dr NE & 118th Ave NE, Kirkland, WA

Are you in need of a fun reason to get out on our beautiful trails this season? How about a photo contest? Send FHNA your photos of fall beauty that you find on Finn Hill and they'll be evaluated by our Finn Hill neighbor and professional photographer Melinda Hurst Frye.

Finalist photos will be shared on social media, and winners will be announced with their photos in the FHNA December newsletter. Winning photos will also be displayed on the FHNA homepage for the winter. Anyone can enter. Let's see your stuff!

Join us on the 25th for this cool event, co-hosted by FHNA and the CoSEE!

🍄 Come with us on a guided walk through the forest of O.O. Denny park in search of fungi! Together, we will learn about how different mushrooms support the plants and animals that depend on them and admire the beauty and strangeness of mushrooms all around us.

🍄 Get to know the common mushrooms of our neighborhood, learn identification skills, and discover where to look as you grow your appreciation for another resident of our forests and gardens.

🍄 We will take a 90 minute walk through the forest along Denny creek, including some narrow paths with moderate slope.

* Bring appropriate footwear, water, and rain gear!
* This is a family-friendly event recommended for ages 8 and up.
* Meet at the parking lot across the street from the playground at O. O. Denny Park.
