Save the Cowboy reaches the western lifestyle community through weekly sermons, podcasts, videos, and social media. What exactly is Save the Cowboy? We are a 501c3 Non-Profit Religious Organization that introduces the Good News through the life of the working ranch cowboy. We do this through social media, speaking engagements, STC's Long X Ranch, philanthropy, and feeding the hungry. The cowboy values of Courage, Honor, Respect, Integrity, Strength, and Truth are vastly needed in today’s world of materialism and selfishness. Save the Cowboy has a working cattle ranch in Kiowa, Colorado where we teach and promote the agriculture industry and introduce people to what it truly means to be a cowboy. The beef that the ranch raises is supported by our Long X Ranch monthly donators, where 100% of the donated funds goes towards the ranch operations to feed the hungry, one package of high-quality beef at a time, and help change lives. He preaches about faith, integrity, and resilience, often using real-life cowboy stories that his audience can relate to. His hard work has gained a following among rural and ranching communities, becoming one of the most recognized names in cowboy ministry in the Unites States. The reason for that is Kevin's messages from God appeal most to those seeking a rugged, and more relatable approach to Christianity. There's nobody that ever succeeded in life that at some point didn't look foolish.

When I was about eight years old, at the Pecos rodeo, a western wear store put on a little kid dummy roping contest. And of course I was naturally cowboy, which means you have to have an over-inflated sense of self-confidence. I got out there fully expecting to win the belt buckle. My snot-nosed little four-year-old brother won the five-and-under roping with a buckle you could have served tuna casserole off of. I came in dead last. So I decided roping was for sissies, and I rode bucking horses instead.

Well, I got older, and I got my first real chance in a branding pen, dragging calves to the fire. And y'all that have been to a branding know you usually let the kids go in first and cherry-pick the little ones. These kids are in there picking up two feet, going to the fire, seven, eight, twelve years old, and they are spanking my hiney. Here's a twenty-three-year-old man, and I drug one calf to the fire. One. I felt like an absolute failure. I wanted to go hide underneath a rock. I wanted to uncinch my horse, let him down three notches, load him up in the trailer, and quit.

But you want to know something? That was the first and only time in my life that I only drug one calf to the fire. Because I went home that night and built me a little calf dummy, and I roped that thing for three years. Now I'm not a Top Hand, but I ain't slouchy either. And here's the other thing. You want to know who the only person was that remembered I only roped one? Me. Nobody else cared. We got them all done. A rancher told me one time about a fellow who asked him, how many do you think you drug to the fire today? And he said, we drug them all to the fire. I had a hand in every single one of them.

Years later, when I moved up here, I knew my roping was the one thing holding me back from being the cowboy I wanted to be. So I took some steps to change it. I found a teacher. Or maybe a teacher found me. Ty knew a style of roping I had no idea about, sixty-foot ropes and slick horns, and I was a fish out of water. But I went all in. I bought a custom-made saddle built for that style. If I'm going to learn, I'm going to learn. And then I put in the practice. My son asked my wife one night, where's Dad? She said, where do you think he is? Out on the dummy. Because that's what it took, nearly every single night.

Practice doesn't mean you're going to get it perfect. It means you're working towards it. Practice is about doing a lot of good things and making a lot of mistakes. You're going to look foolish sometimes. Who cares, man? It's part of the process.

Peter wasn't the first to go big and miss big, and neither was I. But notice how Peter started: he found a teacher. Or better said, the Teacher found him, walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and called him off his nets. If you want to become everything God has called you to be, that's still where it starts.

God won't give you more than HE can handle.

Let me start with what a shepherd is. The very idea of a shepherd is that he stays with the flock. He doesn't go anywhere. If a storm comes in, does the shepherd run off? No. As a matter of fact, he goes into protection mode. Does that mean the sheep won't get wet? No. Does that mean there aren't lions and bears out there? No. But the Lord is your shepherd, and he is there through it all. Not just the good times.

In First Kings 19, they're trying to kill Elijah the prophet. He's run off to a cave in the mountains, and he tells God, I'm the only one left. And maybe you feel like you're the only one left too. You've got all these problems weighing down on you, and you don't know where to turn. It doesn't matter what you do. If you turn left, you should have turned right. If you turn right, you should have turned left. Nothing you do seems to be working, and it is killing you.

God says, go out and stand before me on the mountain. And as Elijah stood there, a mighty windstorm hit the mountain, such a terrible blast that rocks were torn loose. But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

There's a lot in your life screaming at you right now. It screams every single day. But God is not in the screaming. He's in the gentle whisper, and he's not going to fight to be heard. He's not going to raise his voice. You're going to have to fight in order to listen.

And you know what God told the man who thought he was the only one left? Go back the same way you came. Go back to where I told you to be. Because God was still right there. He hasn't gone anywhere. He's not ignoring you. He's not mad at you. But he is calling you back. There's a thousand steps we can take that lead us away from God. There's only one step that will take us back to him.

One more thing, because somebody has probably already quoted it at you. Stop saying God won't give you more than you can handle. God won't give you more than HE can handle. There is a difference. One relies on your strength. The other relies on your faith. Choose wisely.

He never said it would be easy on you, but he knows exactly what you need.

If I had a biological son in Jesus' day, if he did something that I didn't like, I could disown him. But if I had an adopted son, I can never disown him.

Once you have it, it changes your life and you're a new creation. You can't go back in time.

They wanted the life, but they didn't want to do everything associated with it, like die to self and love others and don't be a jerk.

Love is the greatest act of submission.

I have asked this question to over a hundred individual women, from all walks of life, all ages, all backgrounds. I ask it of every bride before I do her wedding. And every single woman, without hesitation, has answered it with exactly the same word, every single time.

Here's the question. Women, what would you do if your husband treated you the exact same way he did on your first date, every single moment of every single day? What would you do if he always put your needs before his? If every time he walked by you, he had to touch you, squeeze your shoulder, lean in, give you a kiss? What would you do if your husband looked at you every day with that look that sends butterflies fluttering in your stomach? If he knew when all you needed was to be held, which did not include advice on how he could fix all your problems? What would you do if he lived as an example of how you'd want your son to grow up, and who you'd want your daughter to marry? If he put you before his work, before his play, before his family, and before his friends? What would you do if you knew he would lay down his life for you in an instant, and better yet, lay down his addictions, his wants, his needs? What would you do if he got home every day, walked in, dropped all the stress and the problems and the exhaustion, and traded them for lifting you up in the fiercest of hugs, turning slowly in a circle while breathing in every essence of the woman he married?

Every woman, every time, one word: anything. When I ask it one on one, most of the time she gets teary-eyed. Because she can imagine it, and it's what she longs for. The diamond rings and the big houses and the fancy trucks are nice things, but they're material things. What she needs is what I just described. And here's the part I love to spring on people. Those questions were never really about husbands. I was describing what Jesus Christ did for every single one of us. That's how Christ loved the church. And that, men, is exactly how we are supposed to love our wives.

And understand me: this is not a trade you run to get your way. I'm not talking about a subservient role. I'm talking about a wife so loved that she becomes who God created her to be. That's the whole aim of it.

Love is the greatest act of submission.

Being the head of the household never meant ordering people around. That is not what a godly man does. A godly man loves his wife with such unabashed, unashamed love that she can't help but be the most radiant being on this earth. If you love your wife like Christ loved the church, you will have a woman beyond compare. It sounds easy sitting here. It's the hardest and most glorious work a man will ever do.

"And husbands, here's the hard part, and it's all on you: love your wife the way Christ loved the church. He didn't boss her. He died for her." (Ephesians 5:25, Simplified Cowboy Version)

Jesus doesn't believe in divorce, does he? So why would Jesus divorce you? Do you think he's that shallow?

The Bible keeps saying the same thing over and over and over in different ways so that you will get it through your thick skull that he loves you, he loves you, he loves you.

Once you're saved, you can never be unsaved. You can never lose what God has given.

It takes guts to be the best version of yourself, and the quickest way to get there is to put yourself in service to somebody else.

In 2 Samuel 23, the Bible lists David's mighty men, and down in that list is a fellow named Benaiah. This dude is awesome. He killed two champions of Moab. Another time, on a snowy day, he chased a lion down into a pit and killed it. Armed with only a club, he took on an imposing Egyptian warrior carrying a spear, wrenched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and killed him with his own weapon. And here's the part that gets me: with a résumé like that, Benaiah wasn't one of the Three, and he wasn't the commander of the Thirty. He ended up captain of David's personal guard. The bodyguard. He served David, protected David, did whatever David asked, and after David died, he served Solomon the same way. And what did Benaiah do with all those credentials? Did he walk around saying look at me, look at me? No. He looked to who he could serve. It takes guts to be the best version of yourself, and the quickest way to get there is to put yourself in service to somebody else.

You want to be the best version of yourself? Put yourself in service to somebody else.

And I'll tell you where that shows up on a Tuesday: it looks like being an encourager. That day I got outroped in the branding pen, you know what nobody did? Nobody made fun of me. Not one man. Jim rode by me and said, "If you think I haven't been there, you haven't been a cowboy very long." Sunny told me not to give up when I was walking out. Dale and Clint coached me instead of grading me. Every one of them could have measured themselves against me that day and come out taller, and instead every one of them got underneath me and lifted. Surround yourself with people like that, people who won't let you give up, who will encourage you, who will teach you. And be one. Because I promise you there are people around you right now losing their own side-by-side comparison, feeling about an inch tall, and one word from you could put them back in the saddle. You might also have to let some folks go, the ones who complain about everything and find something wrong with everybody. That's not the crew to ride with.

I'll leave you with something I wrote to my folks one morning, years ago, that still holds: I've been horseback nearly every day here lately, but I pray for y'all often. There is beauty where I have been gathering, branding, and riding, but sometimes we can't see it. Just like we often have to point out a beautiful sunset to someone who is only focused on their problems, let us point out also the beauty of God's love for one another. Encourage someone today.

It is not what is Save the Cowboy. It's who is Save the Cowboy.

I have people ask me all the time and I know that they've asked you too. What is Save the Cowboy? You know, people come up to me all the time and they're like, oh, you're that cowboy preacher. And I'm like, yeah. And what is Save the Cowboy? How would you answer that? Would you say, well, it's a cowboy church. Or you might say, well, it's not really a church like you're used to going to. It's more like a cowboy ministry. Or would you say it's a group of cowboys and cowgirls that get to wear their hats and bring their dogs to church? Or would you say it's a group of cowboys and cowgirls where they can meet together, where they just don't fit in anywhere else? What is Save the Cowboy?

Here's where the name came from. There's an old movie line I built the whole thing on:

The kind of life you're talking about's dead. Snow buried it last winter. It ain't dead. As long as there's one cowboy taking care of one cow, it ain't dead. It ain't dead. As long as there's one.

And here's my answer:

It is not what is Save the Cowboy. It's who is Save the Cowboy. And who is Save the Cowboy? We are neighbors, plain and simple. We are neighbors. And that is something worth saving. Passing on down to our kids, showing them the right way. Not about figuring out who is a neighbor, but figuring out if we are willing to be a neighbor. It ain't dead as long as there's one neighbor taking care of one man or woman.

It's a sick pen for sinners, not a show ring for saints.

Jesus heard it and said, "Healthy folks don't need a doctor, sick ones do. I didn't come to call the ones who already think they're righteous. I came for sinners." (Mark 2:17, Simplified Cowboy Version)
