It is with very heavy hearts that we share that Fire Chief James Michael Curtis has submitted his resignation as Chief of South Roane County Volunteer Fire Department, effective November 1.

Chief Curtis is deeply respected and loved throughout our department, and there is no easy way to put into words what his leadership, dedication, and years of service have meant to SRCVFD and the community we serve.

While we are heartbroken to see him step down from this role, we also understand and fully support his decision. After giving so much of his time to the department and to others, Chief Curtis deserves the opportunity to spend more time enjoying his farm, his family, and a little more balance in life.

Chief, thank you for the countless hours, the late nights, the calls answered, the sacrifices made, and the steady leadership you have given this department. More importantly, thank you for the kind of person and leader you have been to all of us.

Your title may be changing, but the respect, appreciation, and friendship you have earned will not.

Please join us in thanking Chief James Michael Curtis for his years of dedicated service to South Roane County as Chief.

Fire Prevention Week Tip of the Day:

Charge large items (e-bikes, scooters, power tools, etc.) outside when possible, and never leave them charging overnight. Above all never block exits.

Charge smart. Stay safe.

Fire Prevention Week is October 4–10! This year’s theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Our first charging safety tip: If it feels hot, stop!

Stop charging or using a device if it becomes very hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

What a fun morning at Midway Elementary School for their Touch A Truck Day! We loved showing the kids around the trucks, answering their questions, and seeing all that excitement. 💕

But one little girl may have asked the best question of the day:

“How much do you get paid?”

When I told her we don’t. We’re volunteer firefighters, she looked at me and said:

“So… you risk your life for FREE?!” 😂

Yep, kiddo. Pretty much!

Thanks, Midway Elementary, for letting SRCVFD be part of such a fun morning! Hope the children had as much fun as we did.

Today, we remember. 25 years later, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the families forever changed by that day.

May we never forget their courage, sacrifice, and service. 🇺🇸

We had a sweet 🍪 surprise at tonight’s SRCVFD business meeting when Roxie Walker, representing Kingston Chapter #405 of the Order of the Eastern Star, stopped by with a very thoughtful delivery for our volunteers . . . homemade snickerdoodle and chocolate chip cookies, along with a case of bottled water!

There’s just something about homemade cookies showing up at a fire station that makes a meeting a little better. 😊

Roxie, thank you for thinking of our volunteers and for taking the time to show your appreciation. Gestures like this may seem simple, but they mean more than you know.

SRCVFD joins communities across Tennessee in mourning the passing of Dolly Parton.

While our department was never a recipient of her generosity, we have long admired her tremendous support of volunteer fire departments throughout Sevier County. She understood the importance of those who serve their communities and quietly gave back time and time again.

Tennessee lost a legend, and the fire service community lost a true friend and supporter. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.

Update as I’ve been asked which station won the cook-off.

1st place: Station 5 MoonShores’ Portabello Meat sauce by Marisol Martinez
2nd place: Station 2 Paint Rock’s Alfredo sauce by Curtis Watkins Farms
3rd place: Station 1 Smalley Lane meat sauce by Melita Goodman

And the winning sauce was… Portobello Meat Sauce!

But this one wasn’t really the work of just one station, it was a little taste of what happens when a community comes together.

The portobello mushrooms came from a Ten Mile neighbor, the fresh herbs from our Paint Rock farmers, and the yellow & orange tomatoes, also from a Ten Mile neighbor that we roasted to bring even more flavor into the sauce.

Different neighbors. Different ingredients. One winning combination.

And maybe that’s the real recipe here, everybody brings something to the table.

Turns out, community really was our secret ingredient.
