We sent our club’s very first long-term exchange student back home to Italy yesterday. The bonds we formed are lifelong and her host family truly feels like they’ve gained a daughter. Our club is currently looking for both students interested in going on an exchange and families interested in hosting. Could this be you? Rotary supports you every step of the way, from paperwork to problem-solving, and the friendship (often the whole family, on both sides of the ocean) tends to last a lifetime. Learn more at rye5020.org or reach out for more info.

Rotary service projects date back over 100 years. We carry that “service above self” legacy today, working hard to make our communities a little better, one service project at a time.

Do you know? Early on, Paul Harris realized that Rotary needed a greater purpose. While Harris served as President of the Chicago Rotary Club in 1907, the club initiated its first public service project, the construction of public toilets in Chicago. This step transformed Rotary into the world’s first Service Club. The club calls a meeting of civic organizations to establish a committee for installing city comfort stations, or public toilets, to improve sanitation.

It was this same concept of promoting business which led to the first community service project of the original Chicago Rotary Club. In their effort to promote more business, the members decided to construct these toilets because of the great need.

Over a 100 years has passed since that initial installation and you can still see on my below picture that I took in 2017 the faint outline on the side of the building of where the comfort station once stood.

A small but mighty Rotary cleanup crew was out on Saturday morning: Tim Carr, Adam Amos, Ron Carter, Chris Gilbreath, MJ Gilbreath, and Steve Higgins. We disbursed teams via carpools and made a significant impact in cleaning up the south side of State Route 104 from the Hardware Store to the intersection of 104 and 307 near CB Nuts—as always, the road really needed to be cleaned up. Thank you all who were able to give up a summer Saturday morning to help make our community a more beautiful and welcoming place for all!
