Communities for Local Power Helping communities in the Mid-Hudson Region transition to a locally-based, clean energy economy ☀️💚

CLP was founded in early 2013 to oppose the takeover of Central Hudson by Canadian holding company Fortis, Inc. Working with municipalities, elected officials, labor, and individual citizens, CLP won better terms for workers and communities and galvanized interest in strengthening local control over energy decision-making. CLP is currently working on several major projects to transition the Hudson Valley to a green energy economy and strengthen local energy independence and resilience, including bringing Community Choice Aggregation to New York State, and implementing Empower Kingston-- a green jobs paid training program. Visit the CLP website at communitiesforlocalpower.org for more information on CLP's work.

Last week, CLP co-hosted a NYC Climate Week "Power to the People" event with the NY Energy Democracy Alliance and it was a huge success! Nearly 100 people gathered to learn about how our energy system works, how to read our energy bills, and how we can advocate for a greener and more equitable system together.

Yesterday we welcomed our fall cohort of Empower Kingston Trainees! A big thank you to the Good Work Institute for hosting us and to our Alumni, Summer, who works at TZ Electric and taught our trainees how to use all the tools they will need on the job site! They also got to meet all of the contractors who they will work with and learn more about their businesses and what they can do to succeed in their new roles. We look forward to seeing all they learn in their apprenticeship this month!

This week we are celebrating our Finance and Operations Director Rosemary DaCruz for their birthday! 🥳💕

Rosemary remains driven to fight for change to make a better world alongside millions of people fighting against the energy and billing inequalities. They have been working as a key part of our CLP team since 2022.

As a first-generation graduate from Marist University, Rosemary fell in love with the Hudson Valley through several years of working in local politics and student engagement. They’re inspired everyday by an ever-growing collection of stories from community conversations and a passion to bring us together to create a sustainable, beautiful future. When they’re not working, they can be found exploring New York with their beautiful wife Lillyanna or petting stray cats.

🐈‍⬛🐈 Happy birthday Rosemary!!!

A huge thank you to all of the alumni, contractors, and community members who came out to celebrate our Empower Kingston program last night! An extra thank you to Mid Hudson Energy Transition (MHET) and Hot Water Solutions (HWS) for sponsoring our event and to Jen Metzger and Sarahana Shrestha for speaking. We had two summer alumni who attended and let us know that they both got new jobs which officially brings our employment numbers to 13 out of 14 of our summer trainees are now hired! This makes us even more excited to welcome our fall cohort on Monday. Happy 7 years, Empower Kingston!

Last night, Communities for Local Power presented to the Ulster County Legislature on how we were able to use ARPA funds to grow our program and upskill more local residents! We appreciate the partnership with our local government and look forward to continuing to grow to train as many people as possible in the clean energy field!

With more than a year of teaching experience through the college’s TRA program, they are excited to continue learning through the Empower Kingston Program. They like to draw, read (especially memoir and cultural criticism), put cute stickers on things, and support their local libraries.
