Helping communities in the Mid-Hudson Region transition to a locally-based, clean energy economy ☀️💚

CLP was founded in early 2013 to oppose the takeover of Central Hudson by Canadian holding company Fortis, Inc. Working with municipalities, elected officials, labor, and individual citizens, CLP won better terms for workers and communities and galvanized interest in strengthening local control over energy decision-making. CLP is currently working on several major projects to transition the Hudson

Valley to a green energy economy and strengthen local energy independence and resilience, including bringing Community Choice Aggregation to New York State, and implementing Empower Kingston-- a green jobs paid training program. Join CLP during NYC Climate Week for an evening of connection, learning, and community power.

We'll kick things off with a Climate Week Social Reception and then dive into Power to the People: Understanding Energy. Building Community Power, an interactive Energy 101 workshop exploring how New York's energy system works, why energy bills are so high, who makes the decisions, and how everyday people can organize for change.

Whether you're brand new to energy issues or already working for a more just energy future, this space is for you.

Last night, Communities for Local Power presented to the Ulster County Legislature on how we were able to use ARPA funds to grow our program and upskill more local residents! We appreciate the partnership with our local government and look forward to continuing to grow to train as many people as possible in the clean energy field!

This week we are celebrating the birthday of our Empower Kingston Program Assistant Gabby! 🌷

For those of you who don’t know, Gabby is a recent graduate from SUNY New Paltz’s English Literature Program. With more than a year of teaching experience through the college’s TRA program, they are excited to continue learning through the Empower Kingston Program. They like to draw, read (especially memoir and cultural criticism), put cute stickers on things, and support their local libraries.

✨Our Empower Kingston Summer Session has been another resounding success!✨ We are so proud of our trainees for their hard work, dedication, and continual improvement personally and professionally. All 14 of our trainees completed the program and are now our Alum!

Many of these super stars have already been offered full-time and part-time employment.

Thank you and for providing the space for our last day presentations and workshops. We wrapped up the summer with a Resume Writing workshop led by our Empower Program Assistant Gabby and with a presentation from Sharon Williams at the Ulster County Career Center .

Thank you to all of our partnering contractors and crews for your continued mentorship that guides locals further into the trades.

We would like to thank all our amazing partners for presenting last week at our Empower Kingston Orientation.

Our co-founder, County Executive Jen Metzger, spoke about her work in Ulster County and the importance of clean building trades. The Carpenters Union gave an overview of their apprenticeship program and how our trainees can apply. New Yorkers for Clean Power gave an overview of job opportunities in clean energy. Dan Carey Plumbing and our alumni Q spoke about how they turned Empower Kingston into a new career path. Our newest contractor, 3rd Generation Builders, met their first ever group of trainees; and all of our mentor contractors spoke about their businesses and what each trainee would be working on over the summer session.

Our program is so lucky to have such a strong community helping our trainees to find their new careers in the green building trades!

We kicked off our Summer 2026 Empower Kingston Program this week!

Our cohort of apprentices are ready to get hands-on experience in green energy and construction with local contractors over the next four weeks.

Huge thanks to Jen Metzger, our amazing contractors, and our presenters who came to meet and inspire these eager trainees. Our mentor contractors from Carey Plumbing, Eli's Hammer, Hot Water Solutions, 3rd Generation Builders, and The Building Science Group introduced themselves and spoke about their businesses. We also had wonderful presentations from Carpenter’s Local Union 279 and New Yorkers for Clean Power about some potential post-program avenues.

We can’t wait to see what our trainees accomplish this summer and beyond!
