Have you seen the little yellow signs around the lake? A lot of them have been beat up by the wind and rain! But they are telling you that the 2nd herbicide treatment was done on the lake on Friday, May 3rd.

The sign says:
Warning, Pesticide Treatment Area.
The water within 150 feet of this notice and/or 150 feet out from this shoreline has been chemically treated for control of aquatic plants.

The name of the herbicide is Aquathol. The treatment was done by WI Lake and Pond Resource, and if you have questions you can call them at 920-872-2032.

This treatment cost $36, 982.75, which is why we are always fundraising! If you'd like to make a donation towards the treatments, they can be sent to GLIA, PO Box 101, Kingston WI 53939. Thanks for checking in!

Never been to a meat raffle? Here’s how it works. There are usually 5 “rounds” of meat. A round contains 5 or 6 packages of prime cuts of various meats.

Ticket sellers come around selling tickets for that round. Tickets cost $5.00 each, or 3/$10.00. You keep half the ticket, the other half goes in the raffle drum.

If there are 5 cuts of meat in the round, the first number (winner) drawn gets to come up and take their pick of the 5 packages. Now there are 4 packages left and the next number is drawn, and that person gets to take their choice. Each round has 5 or 6 winners, depending on the number of items in that particular round.

I bought a roast at the grocery store this weekend and I can tell you that you are not going to get one for $5.00. If you win a meat prize you are definitely going to come out ahead. If you don’t win a meat item, you are still a winner, because each round you participate in supports the organization that is having the meat raffle, in this case the Grand Lake Improvement Association.

Hope to see you there!!

The w**d treatment is working and the pond is getting clearer. The dead w**ds by the edge of the lake smell pretty badly, but slowly they are going over the bridge and, cross your fingers....soon will be gone!

Memorial Day weekend is coming. It would be a great time to take the boat out on Grand Lake (the Mill Pond). Not only is it fun to do, but it helps to stir up the w**ds which are starting to die thanks to the herbicide treatment. Have a great ride and help clear the lake too! It's a win-win! Wishing you all a safe, happy Memorial Day Weekend!!

It's official. On May 9th Grand Lake had its first herbicide treatment with the hope of reducing the invasive plant Curly-leaf Pondw**d. Curly-leaf invades lakes and becomes dominant due to its tolerance for low light and low water temperatures. It also outcompetes other underwater plants and causes problems due to the formation of dense mats that interfere with recreational activities. And it causes an increase in phosphorus concentrations, causing an increase in algae blooms.

One thing you can do to help the lake...take your boat out and drive around, disturbing the plants. Curly leaf pondw**d flowers, fruits, and produces turions in June, before dying back in mid-summer. Those turions sprout in the fall, live dormant under the ice over winter, and are generally the first pondw**d to come up in the spring. Boating will pull some of those turions out of the mud and prevent more plants from starting. So take your boat out and stir things up!!
