Hunger First Hunger first is a nonprofit organization that has been providing help for those that are food impoverished and homeless since 1998. Give Back to YOUR people!

Here at Hunger First, there are so many greats things we try to do for our friends and neighbors and folks in our awesome Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia Communities. We are way more than just a food pantry. We do feed people and that is an important part of what we try to do. We also clothe people. Sometimes we help them to find places to live. Sometimes we help them with bills and we help them to obtain the prescriptions that keep them alive. Sometimes it isn't about food or about shelter or basic neccessities. Sometimes people just fall on hard times. Sometimes they are out of work for awhile and they need a little assistance to pay for things. Sometimes they need decent dress clothing for a job interview. Sometimes they need toiletries and things of that nature, just until they get paid for a job they just started. I could give you thousands of scenarios and the next day someone would come in and tell us a new story that breaks our heart and makes us want to get involved. We handle each individual crisis or issue with compassion and we do what needs to be done without judgement. We get to know people. We listen to their stories. We welcome them into the Hunger First family. People in our community need help... Right here... in our own back yard! We do rely on the support of our community to get by. Your gifts make an immediate impact on hunger and so many other issues that plague our community. Financial support lets us distribute nutritious food to areas in need, help people get on their feet and so much more. But there are other ways to get involved! You can always speak for us. You can be an advocate for Hunger First. Word of mouth always goes a long way. Tell your friends and your family how they can help end hunger in their community or tell them how they can help local people who are fighting through whatever personal disasters that may have hit their life. OR you can volunteer. WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS! Volunteers play essential roles in distributing food to our network. Because hunger often is a hidden problem, our perception of who is hungry in our state can be biased. In reality hunger affects a significant portion of our state’s population. It takes a special person with lots of heart and compassion to volunteer for an organization and care for so many. Volunteers also sort out donations of clothing and other goods that we get into the Hunger First Free store. They help with special events and things like our Haunted House in a low income neighborhood in the Fall, or with our Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners where we serve the community food and have visits from Santa himself. You can get involved on a personal level. We can always use the extra set of hands and all nice compassionate hearts! Most nonprofits have an unwritten set of rules and criteria they go by to help individuals, and if one does not conform or fit into these, one will be turned away. Some examples of criteria for refusal of help are evidence of an individual being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, display of disruptive behaviors that are common in people who suffer from a mental illness, and expression of a moral difference, just to name a few. At Hunger First, everyone that walks through the door is treated the same, as a human being that needs help.

Dear Friends and Supporters,
I hope this update finds you and your families doing well.
This letter is divided into two parts. Part 1 reviews the past year, our current situation, and the
immediate operational changes we are making to return to 100% capacity. Part 2 outlines our
future goals, our donor outreach, and our mission to uplift the most vulnerable in our community.
First, I owe an apology to our supporters and to the community we serve. Looking back on our
transition from Myrtle Street to our current location in Lynn Garden, I made missteps. In trying
to secure our organization’s long-term future, I let my focus split, specifically by attempting to
launch a restaurant ( closed as of August 1st this year) that was intended to eventually integrate
and support our mission, while simultaneously managing operations across both Kingsport and
Greene County. I took on too much, and our operations suffered as a result.
Part 1: Where We Stand and Lessons Learned
The challenges of the past year: Our journey from Myrtle Street presented unexpected obstacles.
The closure of our Lynn Garden location following one of our program director's serious
illnesses required us to halt operations at Kingsport temporarily. During this time, the facility
suffered further damage from a flood and subsequent weather events.
Community resilience and rebuilding: Despite these severe setbacks, our mission remains
unchanged. We are grateful for the local partners who have stepped in to help assess and begin
the necessary repairs to the property.
Current core operations: While rebuilding physical capacity, we have maintained our
commitment to serving the community. We continue to provide weekly meals to our unhoused
friends.
Part 2: Our Goals and the Path Forward
Our focus now shifts to the future, beginning with a vital initiative: re-establishing transitional
housing. We know that stable shelter is the foundation of recovery and independence. To make
this a reality, we have acquired two trailers for transitional housing. Both are currently being
refurbished, with one nearing completion, and we already have one couple in the process of
making the transition into this new space. We are also actively reaching out to our network of
previous donors while building new relationships and partnerships. In tandem with this housing initiative, we are refining our outreach programs. We are shifting our
focus away from general adult clothing to prioritize children's apparel. Additionally, we are
expanding our distribution of critical essentials, including socks, underwear, and shoes for adults,
along with winter coats for both children and adults.
We will also continue our weekly meal distributions uptown. This vision requires the continued
support and dedication of this community. Together, we can rebuild, expand our reach, and
ensure our organization continues to meet the needs of those we serve for years to come.

Lastly, Our Mission and Our Goal for Humanity
At its core, Hunger First is built on a foundation of education and empowerment. We believe that
sustainable change for the low-income, no-income, and unhoused populations goes beyond
temporary relief; it requires equipping individuals with the tools, knowledge, and dignity they
need to transform their circumstances. Our ultimate goal is the upliftment of humanity as a
whole, ensuring that everyone, especially the most vulnerable among us, has the opportunity to
thrive.
In light of recent events in Tennessee, including the ongoing challenges faced by our homeless
neighbors, this mission has never been more urgent. We are committed to advocating for
systemic understanding and extending a hand up to those who have been marginalized. By
focusing on empowerment, we are not just addressing immediate needs—we are restoring hope
and building a stronger, more inclusive community for all.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we can overcome challenges
and continue meeting the needs of those we serve.
With gratitude and hope,
Michael

We have been asked to help this grandmother in Honaker, VA who has custody of her grandson. She had a bad water leak she wasn't aware of, until she got her water bill of over $700. The water company shut her off and took her meter. She has found a local church to help her with $250 and needs an additional $450.
Can you help? Please let us know here or contact Michael directly. We have access to her name, account number so any donations can be made directly to her account.
We know you have not heard from us in a while. We are still here, but still closed, with works behind the scenes to get going again with the new year.
Many thanks if you can help this grandmother, and thank you for your patience.
