What we do
The Shepherd Center of Kingsport is a non-denominational, non-profit United Way agency that provides programs and services that enable older adults to remain living safely and independently in their own homes as long as is appropriate. The Center also provides resources and counseling for caregivers and family members of older adults. All services are provided free of charge.
The Shepherd Center currently provides services to over 2,100 older adults and caregivers. To receive SC services, an individual must be 55 years of age (60 or older to receive transportation), live in the greater Kingsport area, have limited family in the area and be physically mobile.
Programs and services include transportation to doctors’ appointments, outpatient services, such as physical therapy and lab work, and personal shopping. Shepherd Center volunteers also run errands to pick up groceries and/or prescriptions for those who are homebound. The Shepherd Center offers a medical equipment loan program, which is one of the most requested services. Equipment includes wheelchairs, hospital beds, walkers, canes, bath benches, as well as travel chairs and adaptive equipment, all of which are loaned free of charge as pieces are available.
The Shepherd Center is fortunate to have support from a wide variety of community partners, including United Way of Greater Kingsport, Sullivan South Community Chest, Eastman Chemical Co., area churches and civic organizations, Altrusa, the Has Beens Big Band, and many, many generous individuals.
