Expect the unexpected. Our Jr Wolves team won the White Division Gold Bracket Championship. We did it with only 9 players. Hang in there cause this is going to be a long post. On the baseball side. We were missing our first basemen and best pitcher... so we had to have a back up (who has hardly played first) fill in... that same player pitched a lot this weekend and was the difference maker on Sunday. He also, hit one to the fence, 5 ft from a HR. We picked up 2 guest players, both pitched and hit really well. Their pitching put us in positions to win games when we needed it. They had great attitudes and were a wonderful blessing to our team for weekend. Our main catcher really stepped up on Sunday with great defense in the latter games getting 2 runners out at home, blocking balls in the dirt and getting multiple big hits for us. Our shortstop had to play first and made great plays there included coming off the bag to jump tag a runner. He also hit a stand up triple with a one hopper to the fence. I was most impressed with our outfield. Our centerfielder made the best diving catch I've seen while coaching. Our right fielder caught the highest and farthest hit (that stayed in the park) that I've also ever seen.... He made catches out in Right that earlier in the year he never made. Our left fielder got really good hits against ace pitchers and that is really good as he is playing up a level. Our second basemen hit the ball consistently hard all weekend and made the final play of the championship game to close it out.

Now the player's insider part of the weekend: Be careful what you say... it may come true... On Sunday, during an AB in our first game... we had a runner at third... the score was close and the player who was at bat heard his dad shout from beyond the fence... "I'll give you 10 bucks for basehit here!"- well the player hits a grounder to first base.... like right on top of first base.... for some reason, the first basemen just could not pick up the ball.... he tried multiple times... eventually our player made it to first! He looked immediately in the direction of his dad and said, "thank you! I'll gladly take that 10 bucks!" Then... I said to the team during the first of possible 3 games... that if we win the whole thing, Id buy them pizza... well... be careful what you wish for... we won... and they had a blast eating pizza and my wallet is a bit lighter.

Devotion time: The biggest blessing of the day came after the biggest challenge. Our second game was tough because it was against a team we knew nothing about with players we were evenly matched with. There were some coach confrontations and controversial calls... but we won.... so we had a chance to go be alone near the creek and have a devotional talk.. It is Sunday and we know that many of our players normally go to church then... so if it is possible we try to work in a devotion... but it's important to note that players are there for baseball, not God... so I try to tread lightly on saying things are "true" and instead tell players they must figure things out for themselves and to talk with their parents. With that said, we talked about the Bible where the New Jerusalem is basically a large Minecraft cube made out of Jasper (lol look it up). That it is a place where God wipes away every tear and there is no more crying. I said, they made it to the championship game... there is no crying there.... we made it... play free... play loose... have fun. They seemed to get it. If a pitcher started to loose the fun aspect of his pitching, Id yell "Minecraft!" and it helped him keep perspective.

Now the coach's insider part of the weekend: in the Tri-Cities, so many teams get to know each other... they meet on the field and are put in pressure cooker situations and only really get a chance to build their relationships in those settings... it can be good... it can also be really tough. Some of the toughest conversations I have had as a head coach have come from the confrontational moments. So it helps when you have a peer coach that you get to know outside of the field. A certain coach has been that for me... after a weekend tournament, I really look forward to brain dumping, processing the "shoulda woulda coulda" type thoughts with him. Us coaches can get stuck in our heads so it helps to think things through a bit with another coach who gets it. This weekend that fellow coach was in the division with us... we got a chance to play the team twice and it was so fun.... because we didn't have to worry about offending each other... we played hard... played to win... but it was fun... the kind of fun you have in the backyard playing wiffleball with the neighbor kids until sunset. I have had a lot of ups and downs as a coach and I feel like I'm still learning... but this weekend it seems like all those trials paid off, into one fantastic redemptive memory that I will cherish for a lifetime. Thank you Jr Wolves family (and extended family) for believing in me, sticking by me.. .and achieving the first ever Gold Bracket Championship in Jr Wolves history. -if you read this far... thank you for caring.

We are now a month in to our 2026 Spring Season. It's been a battle with the transactional off season question marks to the day game decisions. But somehow we made it to the finals (2 silver, 1 gold) in each of our first 3 weeks. This weekend we played in the Tri-Cities. We knew many of the teams, their players and coaches personally. On Sunday, in the Silver bracket, we had a gutsy performance from our starting pitcher... then a home run (over the fence) from another! It was a close nail biter game but we were able to advance. Then we played a team we have scrimmaged many times before... so we were very familiar and to me, it felt almost like 2 sets of families getting together for a picnic and a late afternoon friendly softball game... but that feeling changed once our starting pitcher got hit with a line drive in his shoulder.... it was tough to see! But he was tougher than the hit and handled it well. That same player almost hit one out of the park that day! He got MVP for us. For devotion we talked about how prayer is like a string. As long as we hold on to the string... we hold on to our center... to our "balloon." The more we can connect to what can Truly center us... the less likely we will fly off all over the place! (me included)....we even joined in prayer with the other team and they got to pray for our starting pitcher. alrighty if you have read this far... thank you, thank you to our guest players, our parents, our coaches, support family and to our players! We are not part of an organization... there is only one Jr Wolves team that I know of... so for these families to invest their time here means a lot... we are thankful to see them grow into fine young men.

We were thankful to learn about a tournament organization called Sandlot Sports in Knoxville. They provided an good value and drama free experience at Carter Park in the Knoxville area. We had a great time playing on a beautiful hot weekend. The boys ended up as finalists out of the teams and even scored 20 runs in a game! Every player hit the ball... and our pitchers threw strikes. A special shout out to the parents for seeing the value in driving a bit farther to play in these tournaments. Check out playncs.com for info if you want to consider these tournaments for your team. Now on to a Tri-Cities tournament with the awesome G.C. at ETNUSSSA for March 28-29.

We kicked off our Spring 26 season with a tournament in USSSA Knoxville ... the boys had to fight through a constant sandstorm on Saturday. One of our players hit an inside the park home run and we also had a guest player do the same! On Sunday we won our first game and made it into the silver bracket finals. Thankful to our guests players who really helped us win! We have 3 players who have never played travel ball... so getting a chance to be recognized with a ring really helps show them that all their training and hard work so far has paid off a bit. I am so proud of how hard they pushed through, injury, weather conditions, screaming fans, early morning wake ups, long drive times and me, lol. We had a good devotion time on Sunday morning and are thankful that every day is a new day. His mercies are new every morning! special shout out to the parents for their support and care for this team... now time to train again for the next one!

We played in the last Fall East Tennessee USSSA Tournament of 2025. All the hard work these players and coaches had paid off and we made it to the Gold bracket championship game. This was a new milestone for us and we are thankful for everyone involved who helped make this happen. Now on to winter workouts and getting ready for Spring JR Wolves Baseball 2026, as promised.

This last weekend we went down to Knoxville to play a tournament there. This was a new location for us against new teams. We learned a lot and got a chance to win the Silver bracket. Q won MVP! Every week we strive to get 1-2% better.

The boys really started to bond this weekend as everybody made a positive impact on the gameplay. That is my favorite part, no one person needs to carry a team... the dynamic of elite vs. non-elite players happens on most teams from little league to the majors... but my hope is that our team doesn't see clicks... but sees each other as equals who will support the other no matter what they face on the field.

Our first fall 2025 USSSA Tournament in our own back yard of Kingsport is a victory in and of itself. These boys have put in the work to earn the right to be here and I am grateful to coach them. Many of our players haven't played much travel ball so this was a good experience for them to learn how. Saturday was a huge part of that learning experience... I saw it as spring training of sorts where each pitcher got an inning to showcase what they could do. It was a tough day, back to back games and it seemed hotter than the actual temperature. The boys played hard but were tired and made quite a few mental /physical mistakes.

What a difference a day makes come Sunday! We started with a motivational talk on Freedom. We won our first bracket game in tremendous fashion with our catcher, catching a pop up behind home plate (bases were loaded) that was hugging the fence line... a very difficult catch for any player. Then, we went up against the top seed in our bracket... we were down 4-3 going in to the last inning... so we played them tough but ultimately they pulled away. At the end of every travel ball season... it is full of unknowns and unexpected moves.... it's my least favorite time to be a coach... but the beginning of a season brings much hope and fun to see how the players who have stayed and the new players who have chosen to believe in you.... grow. May the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 season see ALL travel ball teams grow in their players development, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Shout out to Caitlyn for the amazing pics!! We really do appreciate it!

this weekend Gabe got to coach at the Tennessee All State. it was great to see so many ball players from the region. Our team was blessed with 2 Wolves players. We changed our name from Team Orange to The OJays. Our mascot was a giant orange named Squezy. Do much talent. It was so fun to coach. Luke and Mason both were rewarded as the fastest players in 9U/10U! it was tough to juggle 12 kids who all want to play in the infield but we made it work and we came together as a team in a short amount of time.
