Thank you to those that joined us today for our Warbler Walk at Browntown Wilderness Park today!

Some highlights from today included seeing a pair of Red-Shouldered Hawks and this Mississippi Kite, and hearing/catching a glimpse of a Hooded Warbler and a Yellow-Billed Cuckoo! We also heard a Prothonotary Warbler for just a minute, but could not spot it.

Good birding today! 🐦

Today is World Migratory Bird Day! 🌍

As they cross mountains, deserts and oceans, billions of migrating birds use similar routes to take them to and from their breeding grounds. They’re known as flyways – the superhighways in the sky.

Flyways connect a network of breeding sites, feeding grounds, stopover sites and wintering areas that birds depend on to survive. But migratory birds are disappearing. Worldwide, more than 40% of species are in decline.

This year’s theme is: β€œEvery bird counts. Your observations matter.”

πŸ“±By recording the birds you see on eBird, you are engaging in community/citizen science that helps track migration patterns, population trends, and changes in habitats across flyways.

Birds are our compass. Their health reveals the health of the planet and shows where action is most urgently needed.

Our upcoming field trip schedule is finished! This year, we are going to offer more local birding outings, with occasional out-of-county outings planned as well (to be announced).

We want to help everyone see the fantastic birds you're able to find right here in Camden County! We also wanted to make our birdwatching outings more accessible and nearby, and we encourage ANYONE to join us, even if you consider yourself a beginner, or just want to be out in nature!

We hope to offer more programs/classes in the future as well, so be on the lookout!

Today is ! πŸ¦πŸ¦‰πŸ¦†πŸ€

This day is celebrated annually on the last Saturday in April to encourage birdwatching, nature appreciation, and conservation. Get outside and look for some birds today! The best part is that there are birds everywhere - you can observe right in your own backyard!

But if you would like to get out in nature, here are some of our favorite birding spots in Camden County!
- Cumberland Island National Seashore
- Crooked River State Park
- Ceylon WMA
- Sugarmill Tabby Ruins
- Downtown St. Marys Waterfront Park
- Woodbine Riverfront Park Boardwalk
- Browntown Park Boardwalk
- St. Marys Civic Park Pond

What was your favorite bird you saw today? Let us know in the comments! 😁

Happy Earth Day everyone! 🌎 Today, we would like to make an exciting announcement.

We are pleased to announce that Camden County Audubon Society has been awarded a Collaborative Grant from National Audubon! We are so excited to present this next project to everyone in Camden County.

Discarded fishing line has been a major hazard to wildlife in our coastal Georgia community, since there are so many fishing access locations and too few disposal bins for fishing line. We have seen many instances of wildlife, especially birds, getting tangled and injured from fishing line, as well as plenty of fishing line carelessly discarded in nature.

Therefore, Camden County Audubon Society has proposed the addition of 8 Designated Fishing Line Recycling Bins to be built and placed around our county! We hope that by placing more easily accessible fishing line recycling bins at various popular fishing locations, people will utilize those, and there will be less fishing line discarded in the environment.

We have a few locations in mind that are in need of one, but we want to hear your suggestions as well! Comment below if you know of any popular fishing locations anywhere in Camden County, GA that are in need of a fishing line recycling bin. 🐟

(Pictured is one of the fishing line recycling bins currently in Downtown St. Marys.)

It is officially baby bird season! 🐣 I know we have already seen plenty!

We often want to help when we see or find wildlife that looks like it might be in trouble. But sometimes, the best thing to do is nothing!

Many baby birds you will start seeing are called fledglings - small but fully feathered, usually has a short tail and a β€œgrumpy face.” Fledglings are typically on the ground for a few days, hopping around and learning to fly. In most cases, mom and dad are nearby and still feeding them! The best thing to do is leave them be and don’t take them away from their parents.

You can observe from a distance, and only intervene if the bird is injured, if it has been in a cat’s mouth, or if the bird is acting weak with eyes closed or not hopping away. You can visit our resources page (link in the comments) on orphaned and injured birds if you have more questions or want to learn more!

Pictured here are 2 of 4 adorable baby Loggerhead Shrikes that one of our members found. Parents were very close by, making sure their babies stayed safe!

🚨 LIGHTS OUT ALERT: APRIL 17 *UPDATED FORECAST* 🚨

More than 11 MILLION BIRDS are expected to migrate across Georgia tonight, Friday, April 17.

πŸ€” How do we know?
Our Lights Out Georgia forecasts come through a partnership with Purdue AeroEco Lab. The Bird Nerds (said with love and reverence) at Purdue and BirdCast use weather radar and decades of data to track and predict bird migration in real time.

You can even explore which species may be flying overhead at BirdCast: https://birdcast.org/

πŸ”΄ Tonight is a HIGH alert night. These nights make up only about 10% of the season but account for OVER HALF of all migration activity, so going Lights Out tonight is especially important.

⏰ Set your reminder now:
Turn off non-essential outdoor lights from midnight to sunrise.

(And then go birding Saturday morning to enjoy all the birds that made it safely through! 🐦)
