Dr. Josh Tolbert (nominee for Public Service Commission District 5), Ms. Shelia Edwards (nominee for Public Service Commission District 5), and Mr. Peter Hubbard (nominee for Public Service Commission District 3) all were invited to respond to a question from the audience about a second meter reading fee that Georgia Power adds to the bill for the small number of customers who opt out of the automatic meter reading that all Georgia Power customers pay for.
Mr. Hubbard is the incumbent in the PSC District 3 seat and was able to say with authority that there were only about 1000 customers who ask to opt out, so not charging them extra would be "a rounding error" for Georgia Power.
The other nominee, Mr. Fitz Johnson was the PSC District 3 member when Georgia Power added this fee. He was appointed to the PSC in 2021 when Mr. Chuck Eaton resigned to accept an appointment to a judicial branch office, and so was the incumbent when he ran for this office in the special election last year. Mr. Johnson did not respond to our invitation to attend the forum, so forfeited any opportunity to weigh in on this question.
