Dr. Josh Tolbert (nominee for Public Service Commission District 5), Ms. Shelia Edwards (nominee for Public Service Commission District 5), and Mr. Peter Hubbard (nominee for Public Service Commission District 3) all were invited to respond to a question from the audience about a second meter reading fee that Georgia Power adds to the bill for the small number of customers who opt out of the automatic meter reading that all Georgia Power customers pay for.

Mr. Hubbard is the incumbent in the PSC District 3 seat and was able to say with authority that there were only about 1000 customers who ask to opt out, so not charging them extra would be "a rounding error" for Georgia Power.

The other nominee, Mr. Fitz Johnson was the PSC District 3 member when Georgia Power added this fee. He was appointed to the PSC in 2021 when Mr. Chuck Eaton resigned to accept an appointment to a judicial branch office, and so was the incumbent when he ran for this office in the special election last year. Mr. Johnson did not respond to our invitation to attend the forum, so forfeited any opportunity to weigh in on this question.

The nominees for the two Public Service Commission seats that will be on our ballots in November were asked to present their policy statements on these issues / questions related to the PSC: (1) Public safety, with a focus on such questions as what needs to be done to have a power grid that is resilient against hurricanes and sabotage; (2) Education and Healthcare with a focus on how to provide better rural internet access for remote teaching and telehealth; and (3) Cost of living, the Economy, and Accountability, with a focus on how to increase transparency in how the PSC regulates Georgia Power and how the PSC can provide guidance to communities where tech companies are trying to build data centers. During Monday's forum, Ms. Amanda Hollowell, nominee for the office of US House Representative from Georgia's 1st District, was asked to talk about how she would use that legislative position to address the issues of: (1) Cost of living; (2) Healthcare costs and access; and (3) Immigration.

If Mr. Jim Kingston, the other nominee for this office, had responded to our invitation to attend the forum, he would have had the opportunity to talk about how he would use that legislative position to address the same issues, and any other issues that are of concern to us and other voters in Georgia's Congressional District 1.

Headline in today's "Atlantic Journal Constitution" reports the anti-voter move that we anticipated. As the last of the three candidates to respond to the prompt "What are your thoughts regarding voter suppression?" says in this segment of our recording of our forum on party platforms on Monday said, "We also need to stop gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is a huge problem that they use in the state of Georgia to suppress our vote."

Here's the full text of this response by Ms. Amanda Hollowell (candidate for US House District GA-1):

"At the state level, there's a Voting Rights Act that has almost passed, and Defonsio, when you get in office, you will be able to pass that. At the national level, we need to submit the "John Lewis Voting Rights Act" again, and make sure we actually vote for that this time and get it reinstated.
We also need to stop gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is a huge problem that they use in the state of Georgia to suppress our vote.
We need to make sure that we're doing all the things we can, and I would say even [addressing Dr. Powell] when you become state school superintendent, it's also informing students of their rights to vote. Right, and bringing civics classes back.
So there's many ways that we are all responsible in this room. It's not just about [passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act], it's also about (John Lewis quote) "putting faith in action."
And we need to make sure that we're educating folks, that we're giving everyone the opportunity to check their voter registration year-round, but also making that ballot accessible and making sure we're explaining to everyone what is on the ballot, what is at stake, and then us, as elected officials and as legislators, need to make sure we are putting policy back into Washington and back into the state of Georgia that is protecting voters."

Early voting starts in two months. Save the date for this informational forum on platforms and candidates for the partisan offices on our November Election ballots.

These partisan offices are the two federal offices, the ten state-wide offices, the members of the Georgia General Assembly for Senate District 3 and House District 180, and (for voters who live in County District 2 and District 4) County Commissioner.

All candidates for these offices, including qualified nominees who will be on the ballot and write-in candidates, are invited to be present to answer questions about their platforms.

As promised, we are updating our posts about the visits to Camden County by the two candidates for governor with the following extracts from the Tribune & Georgian coverage of Ms. Lance Bottoms's visit in last week's issue.

"Unlike Jackson, who stopped in St. Marys earlier in the week, Bottoms spoke extensively about her plans as governor and took questions from the audience." (August 8, 2006, issue, p. 1)

Also, "After the meeting, Bottoms spoke with the Tribune & Georgian about some issues that have recently garnered interest in Camden County." (August 8, 2006, issue, p. 7)

Another apparent difference between what the two governor candidates did on their visits: Whereas Keisha Lance Bottoms urged everyone to vote all the way down the ballot, Rick Jackson seems not to be concerned about who is elected for any other office. If this impression is inaccurate, please point us to reports or recordings of what he has said about down ballot races.

Voters who live in County Commissioner District 2 or District 4 will have the incumbent in that position on their ballots and voters who live within the Kingsland or St. Marys City limits will have candidates for three municipal positions on their ballots.
