Some members of the community may have noticed Quint 12 positioned behind the Fire Station recently with its aerial ladder fully extended. Quint 12 was undergoing its annual aerial inspection in accordance with NFPA 1911, the standard for the inspection, maintenance, testing, and retirement of automotive fire apparatus.
This annual inspection is required at least once every year to help ensure the safety, reliability, and operational readiness of the apparatus. During the inspection, trained technicians examine critical components of the aerial device, including welds, bolts, rotation gears, cables, and other structural components.
The inspection also includes testing the hydraulic systems, stabilizers, safety interlocks, and the overall operation and movement of the aerial device. One of the most important portions of the testing is verifying that the aerial can safely support its maximum rated tip load without structural or mechanical failure.
Regular inspections and testing are essential to ensuring that Quint 12 remains ready to respond when our community needs it most. The safety of our firefighters and the public depends on having apparatus that is properly maintained, thoroughly inspected, and operating as designed.
