Trail development through Chain of Ponds Twp. was begun this summer along Horseshoe Stream, south of Horseshoe Pond, toward Natanis Point Campground and westerly of Natanis Pond. The trail is near the route led by the army of Benedict Arnold on his ill-fated attack against the British forces in Quebec City in 1775. The historical events will be commemorated with interpretive panels along the trail and serve "people-powered" activities including hiking, biking, paddling and xc skiing. We'll pick up construction again in the spring - this whole area is awesome and is going to provide a great experience for all kinds of recreational and educational uses.

Funds for the development of the trail have been provided by the Maine Community Foundation, the Hugh & Elizabeth Montgomery Foundation, the Davis Conservation Foundation, the Town of Carrabassett Valley and the Franklin County Kibby TIF Fund.

Trail improvements through the Bigelow Preserve were substantially completed this month with drainage work, culvert installations, mowing, blow down and brush removal, gate relocation and bridge work. The trail will connect the trailhead at the Bigelow Range Trail in Stratton to Stratton Brook Pond Hut, CR NEMBA's trail system and the Esker Trail along Stratton Brook Pond. Some additional bridge work for mountain bike access will be completed in the spring 2016.

Funds for construction were provided by the Maine Community Foundation, the Hugh & Elizabeth Montgomery Foundation, the Davis Conservation Foundation, the Sugarloaf Region Charitable Foundation, the Town of Carrabassett Valley and the Franklin County Kibby TIF fund.

Looking for a great trail loop? Start at Campbell Field, go left on the Narrow Gauge, up towards Stratton Brook Hut, over towards Poplar Hut and back up the Gauge. Lots of options to make it more challenging with single track (more than this map shows.) Thanks Maine Huts & Trails and Carrabassett Region Nemba!

A similar trail project in The Forks. Says Russell Walters of Northern Outdoors : “If we don’t create these trails that bring people downtown into our neighborhoods, we’re not really serving our communities well. I think it’s critical that these trails connect our communities.”

Complications in obtaining federal funding slowed the project at first, but now organizers say it’s definitely going to happen.

And the industry has grown over the last five years, boosting employment. Certainly Maine has lots to offer visitors: agricultur…

We prefer trails to roads in Maine...

This 2005 map from the United States Geological Survey shows the distance to the nearest road at each point in the lower 48. A tip of the hat to Miguel Vieira.
