“That's their secret sign! See, Van Buren, he was the eighth President.. (Holds up 8 fingers) They thought I was a former Van B. Boy!” - Kramer

Eight fingers, right? The Lindenwald estate was owned by Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States. Van Buren purchased the 36-room mansion during his presidency in 1839, and it became his home and farm from his leaving office in 1841 until his death in 1862. Van Buren named the estate Lindenwald, which is German for "linden forest", after the American Linden (American Basswood or Tilia americana) trees lining the Albany-to-New York Post Road, which is still located in front of the home. The building is an eccentric mix of Federalist, Italianate, and Gothic Victorian styles as a result of Van Buren's renovations to the house, which included the tower on the south-west corner of the home.

Today the Friends celebrated Hannah Van Burens life with a wreath laying gathering at her gravesite. We also presented the Valatie Food Pantry with a donation in her honor.
Hannah had 5 sons with Martin and passed away from tuberculosis in 1819. When she died, the family lived in Albany & she was originally buried in Albany. She was reinterred in the Dutch reformed Cemetery in Kinderhook at an unknown date.

Join us this Sunday at 3pm to honor Kinderhook's "First Lady", Hannah Van Buren, at the Van Buren Gravesite at the Kinderhook Reformed Church Cemetery on Albany Avenue. Hannah was born on March 8th, 1783, and died of tuberculosis one month before her 36th birthday in 1819.
Hannah was a supporter of people experiencing poverty during her lifetime, and to celebrate her good works, the Friends of Lindenwald will make a donation in her memory to the Valatie Food Pantry.
