💚🖤 AACNW BUSINESS EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT 🖤💚

⭐ THE POWER OF RESPONDING TO CUSTOMER REVIEWS — YOUR BUSINESS REPUTATION MATTERS!

Business owners, did you know that how you respond to customer reviews can be just as important as the review itself?

At the African American Chamber of Commerce of Northeastern Wisconsin (AACNW), we believe that excellent customer service doesn't end when a customer walks out your door or completes a purchase.

In today's digital world, your customers have a voice through platforms like Google, Yelp, and Facebook, and their experiences can influence whether someone chooses to support your business.

But here's something every entrepreneur should understand:

A negative review doesn't necessarily damage your reputation. Sometimes, it's how you respond to that review that determines how others perceive your business.

✅ THE BENEFITS OF RESPONDING TO REVIEWS

💚 Builds Customer Trust: A thoughtful response shows customers that their opinions matter and that you're committed to providing excellent service.

💚 Demonstrates Professionalism: Potential customers can see how you handle compliments, criticism, and concerns.

💚 Creates Opportunities to Improve: Not every negative review is an attack. Sometimes, it's valuable feedback that identifies something within your business that needs attention.

💚 Strengthens Customer Relationships: Thanking customers for positive reviews shows appreciation and encourages continued support.

💚 Helps Attract New Customers: People researching your business may feel more confident when they see that you actively engage with your customers.

💚 Shows Accountability: Acknowledging legitimate mistakes and taking steps to correct them demonstrates integrity and leadership.

🚨 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU IGNORE CUSTOMER REVIEWS?

❌ Potential customers may question whether you value customer feedback.

❌ Negative experiences can remain publicly unanswered.

❌ You may miss opportunities to address misunderstandings.

❌ Loyal customers may feel unappreciated when their positive feedback goes unnoticed.

❌ Competitors who actively engage with customers may create stronger relationships and earn more business.

Remember: Silence doesn't always mean you don't care, but your customers may interpret it that way.

⚖️ THE OTHER SIDE: RESPONDING THE WRONG WAY CAN ALSO HURT YOUR BUSINESS!

Every review doesn't deserve an emotional reaction.

Business owners should avoid:

❌ Arguing publicly with customers.

❌ Responding while angry or frustrated.

❌ Insulting customers or making personal attacks.

❌ Sharing private customer information.

❌ Making promises they cannot fulfill.

❌ Writing defensive responses that escalate the situation.

Even when you believe a customer's complaint is unfair or inaccurate, professionalism should always come first.

Sometimes the best response is to calmly clarify the situation and invite the customer to discuss the matter privately.

📱 GOOGLE, YELP & FACEBOOK — KNOW YOUR PLATFORMS!

⭐ Google Reviews: Respond professionally to positive and negative reviews. Accurate information and helpful responses can build confidence among people researching your business.

⭐ Yelp Reviews: Keep your responses respectful, factual, and solution-focused. Avoid arguments or pressuring customers to change their reviews.

⭐ Facebook Reviews & Recommendations: Engage with your community, thank customers for their support, and address legitimate concerns.

💡 BUSINESS OWNERS, HERE'S SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:

Two businesses may receive the exact same one-star review.

One business responds with anger, insults, and excuses.

The other responds with professionalism, acknowledges the concern, and offers to discuss a solution.

Which business would YOU feel more comfortable supporting?

Your response isn't just for the person who wrote the review.

It's also for every potential customer who reads it afterward.

💚🖤 AACNW BUSINESS EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT 🖤💚

📱📈 THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA — IF YOU'RE NOT PROMOTING YOUR BUSINESS, WHO IS?

Small business owners, it's time to stop being your community's best-kept secret!

At the African American Chamber of Commerce of Northeastern Wisconsin (AACNW), we believe that having a great product or providing excellent service is only part of building a successful business.

People cannot support a business they don't know exists!

You can have the best food, clothing, beauty products, professional services, or customer experience in your community, but if you're not consistently promoting your business, you could be missing valuable opportunities to grow.

💡 SOCIAL MEDIA IS MORE THAN ENTERTAINMENT. IT'S A BUSINESS TOOL!

Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn give entrepreneurs opportunities to connect with potential customers, build relationships, establish credibility, and promote their businesses without always needing expensive advertising campaigns.

📊 LET'S TALK ABOUT THE NUMBERS!

According to the 2025 Verizon State of Small Business Survey:

✅ 76% of surveyed small and midsize business decision-makers reported that social media positively impacts their business.

✅ 62% reported starting or increasing their investment in content creation over the previous year.

✅ 54% said keeping online content fresh and following social media trends was challenging.

These numbers remind us that social media presents opportunities, but successful marketing also requires effort, creativity, and consistency.

🚨 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T MARKET YOUR BUSINESS?

❌ Potential customers may never discover your business.

❌ Competitors with a stronger online presence may capture more attention.

❌ You miss opportunities to showcase new products and services.

❌ Customers may be unaware of your promotions, events, or business updates.

❌ You lose valuable opportunities to build relationships with your community.

Not using social media doesn't automatically mean your business will fail, but ignoring a marketing tool your potential customers use can put you at a disadvantage.

📢 BUSINESS OWNERS, YOU ARE YOUR BRAND'S BIGGEST ADVOCATE!

Don't be afraid to show your face, tell your story, explain your products, or share the journey behind your business.

Customers often connect with the people behind a brand just as much as the products being sold.

You don't have to have thousands of followers to become successful. You need to reach the right audience and give them a reason to support you.

💚 SIMPLE WAYS TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS:

✅ Post consistently and keep your business information updated.

✅ Share quality photos and videos of your products.

✅ Introduce yourself and tell your business story.

✅ Show behind-the-scenes moments.

✅ Highlight customer reviews and testimonials.

✅ Promote special offers, events, and new products.

✅ Respond to comments, questions, and messages.

✅ Track which posts bring inquiries, website visits, and sales.

✅ Encourage satisfied customers to share their experiences.

Remember: You don't need to go viral to become profitable. You need to build trust, create relationships, and convert attention into paying customers!

💚🖤 AACNW BUSINESS EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT 🖤💚

💰📊 STAY ON TOP OF YOUR BUSINESS TAXES — PROTECT WHAT YOU'RE BUILDING!

A successful business isn't just about how much money you make. It's also about how well you manage your money, understand your tax responsibilities, and protect your business financially.

At the African American Chamber of Commerce of Northeastern Wisconsin (AACNW), we believe that financial literacy and tax education are essential parts of entrepreneurship.

Many entrepreneurs start businesses because they have a great product, a valuable service, or a passion for what they do. However, one of the biggest mistakes a business owner can make is failing to establish a system for managing federal, state, and sales taxes.

🚨 REMEMBER: Just because money is coming into your business doesn't mean all that money belongs to you!

1. UNDERSTAND YOUR TAX RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Wisconsin business owner, depending on your business structure and operations, you may be responsible for:

✅ Federal business income taxes.

✅ Federal estimated income taxes and self-employment taxes.

✅ Federal payroll taxes if you have employees.

✅ Wisconsin state income taxes.

✅ Wisconsin sales and use taxes on applicable transactions.

✅ State employee withholding taxes when applicable.

Your responsibilities depend on your business structure, activities, and tax registrations.

Sales tax collected from customers is not business profit. It must be properly accounted for and remitted when required.

📚 2. HAVE THE RIGHT TOOLS IN PLACE

Every business owner should consider establishing these financial systems:

🧾 Point-of-Sale (POS) System: Track your transactions, taxable sales, sales tax collected, refunds, and daily revenue.

💻 Bookkeeping Software: Use QuickBooks, Wave, Xero, or another reliable system to organize your income and expenses.

🏦 Separate Business Accounts: Keep business and personal transactions separate. Consider a dedicated savings account to reserve funds for upcoming tax payments.

📅 Tax Calendar: Track your filing deadlines and payment due dates. Set reminders before payments become due.

📂 Digital Receipt Storage: Organize purchase receipts, invoices, bank statements, payroll records, and other important financial documents.

👩🏽‍💼 Professional Bookkeeper or Accountant: Work with someone who understands your industry and can help you keep accurate records and meet tax obligations.

3. THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A TAX MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

✅ Fewer surprises during tax season.

✅ Improved cash flow management.

✅ Better understanding of your business's financial health.

✅ More accurate tax filings.

✅ Reduced risk of missed deadlines, penalties, and interest.

✅ Organized records when applying for loans, grants, or disaster assistance.

✅ More time to focus on growing your business.

⚠️ 4. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A SYSTEM?

❌ You may spend money that should have been reserved for taxes.

❌ You may miss required filings and payments.

❌ Penalties and interest can increase what you owe.

❌ Disorganized records can make it difficult to identify legitimate business deductions.

❌ Unexpected tax bills can create serious cash flow problems.

❌ You may struggle to provide accurate financial documentation when seeking business funding.

❌ Ongoing noncompliance can create additional collection or legal problems.

A profitable business can still experience financial hardship if its tax obligations are not properly managed.

📌 5. DEVELOP A WEEKLY FINANCIAL ROUTINE

Make it a habit to:

✅ Review your weekly sales and expenses.

✅ Reconcile your POS reports with bank deposits.

✅ Verify the amount of sales tax collected.

✅ Transfer appropriate amounts into your tax savings account.

✅ Review upcoming federal and state tax deadlines.

✅ Keep your bookkeeper and accountant informed of financial changes.

Important Wisconsin reminder: Businesses with active seller's permits generally must file sales tax returns according to their assigned filing schedule, even when no sales tax is due.

💚🖤 AACNW BUSINESS EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT 🖤💚

📊 KNOW YOUR MARKET! BUILD SMARTER. PRICE RIGHT. GROW STRONGER.

Before you open a business, expand your services, introduce a new product, or increase your prices, ask yourself one important question: DO I REALLY KNOW MY MARKET?

At the African American Chamber of Commerce of Northeastern Wisconsin (AACNW), we believe that entrepreneurship requires more than passion and a great idea. It requires research, financial understanding, continuing education, and the ability to adapt.

A great product in the wrong market, at the wrong price, can struggle regardless of how much effort you put into your business.

📍 1. UNDERSTAND THE COMMUNITY YOU SERVE

Before choosing a business location or establishing your prices, research the community's demographics and economic conditions.

✅ What is the median household income?

✅ What is the average age of residents?

✅ Are you serving families, students, working professionals, retirees, or tourists?

✅ What products and services are already available?

✅ What are customers currently paying for similar products?

✅ Is there enough demand to support your business?

💡 Remember: Just because someone likes your product doesn't mean they can afford to purchase it regularly.

Understanding household income, customer spending habits, and local demand can help you offer appropriate price points while maintaining profitability.

💰 2. KNOW YOUR COSTS BEFORE SETTING YOUR PRICES

Your prices must do more than attract customers. They must help sustain your business!

Consider your inventory, labor, rent, utilities, insurance, taxes, supplies, and other operating expenses.

You cannot build a sustainable business by consistently selling products for less than they cost you to provide.

Affordability matters, but profitability matters too!

📚 3. NEVER STOP INVESTING IN YOUR BUSINESS EDUCATION

Obtaining a business license doesn't automatically mean you know everything about running a business.

Successful entrepreneurs remain students of their industries.

Take classes. Attend workshops. Seek mentorship. Study your competition. Understand your financial statements. Keep up with changing technology, regulations, and consumer behavior.

The more you understand your business, the better equipped you are to protect and grow it.

📦 4. KNOW YOUR PRODUCT OR SERVICE

Would you purchase what you're selling?

Can you explain why your product is worth its price?

Do you understand its quality, costs, benefits, and limitations?

Your customers should never know more about your product than you do!

📈 5. KNOW WHEN TO ADD, REMOVE, OR IMPROVE

Just because something worked five years ago doesn't mean it will work today.

Review your sales reports and customer feedback regularly.

✅ Identify your best-selling products.

✅ Evaluate items that aren't generating a profit.

✅ Introduce products that meet changing customer needs.

✅ Test new ideas before making major investments.

✅ Be willing to discontinue products or services that are no longer beneficial.

Don't become so attached to an idea that you ignore what your numbers and customers are telling you.

🔄 6. DON'T BE AFRAID TO REVAMP OR REBRAND!

Rebranding doesn't mean your business failed.

Sometimes your business needs a refreshed image, an updated menu, improved customer service, different marketing, or an entirely new approach.

The goal isn't to remain the same. The goal is to remain relevant, competitive, and financially sustainable.

💚🖤 AACNW ENTREPRENEURSHIP SPOTLIGHT 🖤💚

🌟 THERE IS ROOM FOR YOUR IDEA — DON'T LET COMPETITION STOP YOU!

To every aspiring entrepreneur who has ever questioned whether they should start a business because someone else is already doing something similar, this message is for YOU!

At the African American Chamber of Commerce of Northeastern Wisconsin (AACNW), we want to remind you that someone else's success does not eliminate your opportunity to succeed.

Think about it! 💡

🥤 Pepsi and Coca-Cola have competed for generations. Both sell similar products, yet both have built successful businesses with loyal customers. Even generic and store-brand sodas have found their place in the market.

🥣 Kellogg's and General Mills both sell breakfast cereals. They offer similar products, sometimes at different prices and with different branding, yet customers continue to support both.

So why should you believe there's no room for your business just because someone else had a similar idea?

The world is big enough for multiple businesses to succeed in the same industry!

Your business may offer something others don't:

✅ A different customer experience.

✅ A unique perspective or personal story.

✅ Better service or a different approach.

✅ Pricing that appeals to another customer base.

✅ A product tailored to an underserved community.

✅ A level of passion, quality, or creativity that makes your brand memorable.

Remember, you don't have to be the first to do something. You just have to give people a reason to choose YOU!

Competition is not necessarily a sign that the market is overcrowded. Sometimes it's evidence that there's demand. The key is understanding your customers, identifying what makes your business different, and building a sustainable business around that opportunity.

🚀 STOP WAITING FOR THE PERFECT MOMENT!

Don't allow fear, comparison, or other people's opinions to convince you that your dream isn't worth pursuing.

Research your market. Develop your business plan. Understand your finances. Find your target customers. Start with what you have, continue learning, and build with purpose.

Your vision deserves an opportunity to become a reality.
