Dec. 22 marks the 145th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Blessed Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, pictured here during his days at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. Father McGivney was ordained in 1877 by Archbishop James Gibbons in Baltimore’s historic Cathedral of the Assumption, the nation’s first cathedral. Michael Joseph McGivney was an American Catholic priest based in New Haven, Connecticut. He founded the Knights of Columbus at a local parish to serve as a mutual aid and fraternal insurance organization, particularly for immigrants and their families.
