Each year, the VFW and local posts recognize high school and middle school students in an essay contest. The national first place winner at the high school receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000. The national winner at the middle school receives $5000. If you are a student in Northumberland or Lancaser Counties, we invite you to apply. Want to apply? Read the rules and eligibility requirements at http://vfw.org/community/youth-and-education/youth-scholarships, and download and complete the 2021-2022 Voice of Democracy entry form as all student entries must be submitted to a Post 12201 by midnight, Oct. 31.http://vfworg-cdn.azureedge.net/-/media/VFWSite/Images/Modules/Community/Youth-and-Education-VOD.jpg?la=en&v=1&d=20210401T200721Z

On September 11, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. pause to honor Patriot Day and remember the 2,996 lives tragically lost 17 years ago in New York City, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. Since that fateful day, our bravest have fought on multiple fronts, with thousands of our nation’s finest paying the ultimate price for defending our freedoms, and thousands more having returned home bearing the physical and mental scars of battle.
The events of 9/11 serve to remind the world of everything our great nation stands for, that we will fight for the freedom to live our lives free from tyranny and fear, and that the true price of freedom is never free.
The more than 1.6 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary encourage all Americans to take a moment tomorrow and throughout the week to reflect on all that has changed since Sept. 11, 2001, and to remember the victims, their families, and those who’ve selflessly sacrificed to ensure our way of life remains.

Today, September 6, we celebrate the 6 month anniversary of our Post. On March 6, the Virginia State Vice Commander, Butch Shupska, presented our Charter to Post 12201 Vice Commander. Twenty-nine local veterans were administered the VFW Oath, creating the Northern Neck's second, and Virginia's newest, VFW Post.
