The first Afghan family and the first SIV refugee arrive safely

A family from Afghanistan arrived in New Haven on Monday night, one family among thousands of refugees fleeing amid the Taliban’s takeover.

A plea from IRS:

Thousands of Afghan families who helped the U.S. government are now fleeing Afghanistan.

At IRIS, we're ready to welcome these families being evacuated and brought to the U.S. — in some cases, with only a 24 hour notice.

Help us find housing for Afghan families!

We need your help with housing leads to welcome our Afghan allies, arriving at any moment. Here's what we need:

Temporary housing for families
(typically 3 - 5 children, plus adults) for 2 weeks or more. Location is flexible.

Affordable, permanent housing (for rent)
immediately available with:
• walking distance to bus route
• 3 bedroom apartments (max $1500 per month)
• 2 bedroom apartments (max $1300 per month)
• separate living accommodations (cannot be within a home)

Please contact me Annie Stirna and I will email you the link or contact IRIS directly

My heart is breaking for the women and girls of Afghanistan 💔💔💔 and for the many Afghanis who helped us. I have reached out to IRIS for information on how we can help.

There are those already in the pipeline as Refugees and those awaiting SIVs. Hopefully more will find their way to refugee status.

Please comment below or message me if you want to help.

IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services
We're thrilled President-elect Biden has promised to "set the annual global refugee admissions cap to 125,000 and seek to raise it over time," after Trump has set the lowest record of refugees admissions in history.

We can't wait to welcome many new families in 2021!

The president-elect pledges to welcome as many as 125,000 refugees a year — up from the Trump administration's record-low cap of 15,000. Here are some challenges that await.

This is a very good day!!

Chief Justice John Roberts was the swing vote in the 5-4 decision, which deals a big legal defeat to President Donald Trump on the issue of immigration.

I am so proud of the Indo family and this team of dedicated individuals. Each and every person in this group went above and beyond to help this family navigate their first months in America. Thank you to the KRRC for always answering the call with a yes. You have truly saved and changed lives.
Annie

After living in a refugee camp in Tanzania their whole lives, the Indo family arrived to Connecticut in 2018.

In the mid 90s, their parents fled the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country producing some of the highest numbers of refugees. IRIS helps 1,000+ refugees and immigrants every year from the DRC, Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan and beyond.

Thanks to IRIS & a co-sponsor group, the Indo family live in a safe home, are enrolled in school, learning English, and can live out their dreams.

The Trump administration plans to shutter many of its immigration operations abroad, cutting back on a crucial support system for those who wish to come to the United States.

Amazing!
