We can't emphasize the last paragraph enough: as soon as you think you may be lost or in trouble, call 911. We can often direct you to safety on your own, but it also gives us time to start planning if you do need a rescue.
For the third time in two weeks, we've received phone calls about lost skiers in the backcountry of Bolton. Statewide, there have been almost 25 calls. The calls are all remarkably similar: I'm lost, I don't have enough clothing, I don't have a map, or I'm having problems with my equipment. Thankfully, all parties have been assisted out of their predicament by a variety of rescuers.
Before you head into the backcountry, make sure you have the 10 essentials as well as a mapping app (we like CalTopo) so you can track your location and determine how to get back to your car. A rescue can be hours away, so you need to make sure you can be self-sufficient. If you do get into trouble, don't hesitate to call 911. Sometimes we can get you moving in the right direction with a phone call, but if you need something more, we can facilitate a full-scale rescue operation.
