A HUGE thank you to , and the greater Killington community for supporting KSAR! After a month-long fundraising effort, culminating with a line dancing event at The Wobbly Barn, the contributions drew nearly $25,000. Killington Resort doubled their initial $5k match and the community showed up BIG time! Your incredible generosity will fund essential equipment and advanced training for the Killington Search and Rescue team! 👏👏👏

Last month we conducted our monthly training in collaboration with the Killington Ski Resort snowgrooming team.

It was a windy and bitterly cold night. The team was given the last known location of a mother and daughter who were skiing on the resort but became lost following the father into the Killington backcountry. The entire team was given a snowcat ride near the summit (some 23ish members). We used CalTopo mapping and navigation to pin their location, access terrain and access points to quickly locate the lost persons and track teams as they entered and exited the woods.

The team practiced their hypothermia wrap (this time on a much smaller patient than they are used to), patient assessment and responding to changes in patient conditions when suffering from hypothermia and cold related injuries.

We are grateful for the eagerness of Killington Resort crew to collaborate on this training, we love a good snowcat ride!

And last but certainly not least, thank you to our mother and daughter volunteers! There aren’t many kids willing to sit out in those cold conditions for “fun”. We hope it made for a great story at school the next day.

If you venture into the backcountry for any reason, you must be prepared to spend the night. The hikers called for help around 6pm; the first rescuers didn't reach them until 11:20pm, over 5 hours later. Even in more moderate temperatures, you would be at extreme risk without proper shelter and layers for the conditions.

Great job supporting Killington and surrounding communities!

Great job supporting Killington and surrounding communities!

KSAR members Josh, Dylan, Andy, Kristina and Diane and Kristen (not pictured) participated in the 2026 NSAA Eastern Winter Conference and Tradeshow at Killington Resort (Feb 3,4). The Ski industry event featured educational sessions, networking and trade show.
KSAR members participated in sessions focused on how ski areas work effectively with local agencies, volunteer and SAR teams before, during and after incidents.
Thank you to Killington Resort for hosting such a valuable event.

KSAR Community!

We are looking for YOUR input. Our team of trained rescuers and avid outdoor recreationalists, would love to provide our community members with tips of our trade.

What do you want to learn?

- Winter hiking/skiing essentials?
- Trip planning?
- Gear suggestions?
- Winter survival?

As a team, we want to continue to serve our community by not only preparing ourselves every month to provide timely and effective rescue operations but to prepare YOU too.

We are hoping for an incredible winter season!

We can't emphasize the last paragraph enough: as soon as you think you may be lost or in trouble, call 911. We can often direct you to safety on your own, but it also gives us time to start planning if you do need a rescue.

For the third time in two weeks, we've received phone calls about lost skiers in the backcountry of Bolton. Statewide, there have been almost 25 calls. The calls are all remarkably similar: I'm lost, I don't have enough clothing, I don't have a map, or I'm having problems with my equipment. Thankfully, all parties have been assisted out of their predicament by a variety of rescuers.

Before you head into the backcountry, make sure you have the 10 essentials as well as a mapping app (we like CalTopo) so you can track your location and determine how to get back to your car. A rescue can be hours away, so you need to make sure you can be self-sufficient. If you do get into trouble, don't hesitate to call 911. Sometimes we can get you moving in the right direction with a phone call, but if you need something more, we can facilitate a full-scale rescue operation.
