The New England Dairy team had a great time yesterday touring Richardson's Ice Cream! We were joined by our partners at Wave Collective and Checker's Product Servicing for a chance to learn all about Richardson's robotic milking setup, how they care for their cows, and the process of making their delicious ice cream right on site.

We always appreciate the chance to visit and learn from our local dairy farmers. Thank you to the team at Richardson's for hosting us 🐄❤️

P.S. We can neither confirm nor deny whether our team got too competitive playing mini golf (we totally did)

New England dairy farmers are doing their part to protect our local waterways. One example of water stewardship is the use of buffer strips. These are areas of vegetation, such as grass, trees, or shrubs, strategically placed to help protect water quality and soil health. These strips act as a barrier, intercepting and filtering runoff from fields. 🌱💧

Cows are part of a natural carbon cycle. Plants absorb CO2 from the air, cows eat those plants, and microbes in a cow’s stomach help break them down, producing methane. That methane stays in the atmosphere for about 10 years before converting back into CO2 and re-entering the cycle.

Fossil fuels work differently. Cars, trucks, planes, and other vehicles burn carbon that’s been stored underground for millions of years, releasing “new” carbon into the atmosphere as CO2. That CO2 can remain in the atmosphere for around 1,000 years.

In simple terms:
🚗 Fossil fuel emissions accumulate over time
🐄 Methane from stable cattle populations cycles through the atmosphere

Understanding the difference matters when talking about climate solutions. 🌎

Dairy farmers are committed to finding improved ways to care for their herds while producing nutritious dairy products with the planet in mind. They continuously improve how they care for their animals and manage their land, air, and water resources.

Through innovative farming practices across the industry, producing a gallon of milk in 2017 required 30% less water, 21% less land, and a 19% smaller carbon footprint than it did a decade earlier. Dairy farmers continue to work every day to further improve their sustainability efforts. usdairy.com/sustainability/environmental-sustainability
