JUNETEENTH: HONORING THE JOURNEY TO FREEDOM
Freedom Was Not Given β It Was Fought For
Juneteenth is more than a celebration. It is a remembrance of the courage, sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering faith of those who endured the horrors of slavery and continued to fight for freedom, dignity, and justice.
Although President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freedom did not immediately reach every enslaved person. In Texas, many African Americans remained enslaved until June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced General Order No. 3, declaring that all enslaved people in Texas were free.
That historic day became known as Juneteenth.
For African Americans, and especially African American women, Juneteenth represents the strength of a people who refused to give up hope. Women carried families through unimaginable hardships, preserved culture and faith, nurtured communities, and became pillars of strength during one of the darkest chapters in American history.
Today, we honor those whose names may never appear in history books but whose sacrifices paved the way for future generations. We remember the mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and elders who risked everything for the promise of freedom. Their courage gave us the opportunity to dream, achieve, lead, and thrive.
As we celebrate Juneteenth in the great State of Texas, we recognize that the journey toward equality continues. The fight for justice, opportunity, and civil rights did not end in 1865. We carry forward the legacy of those who came before us by advocating for our communities, educating future generations, and standing united in the pursuit of a brighter future.
May we never forget the lives that were sacrificed so that we may walk in freedom today.
Let us honor their legacy through courage.
Let us strengthen our communities through unity.
Let us build our future through faith and perseverance.
