Last month, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America’s Military Veterans Program (MVP) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) had the profound honor of building a memorial wall for JBLM’s Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU). Officially unveiled on May 21, 2026, the memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the fallen service members whose courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to duty left an indelible mark on our nation and on all who served beside them.
The mission of a Soldier Recovery Unit is one of healing, resilience, and transition. Every day, Soldiers assigned to the SRU demonstrate remarkable strength as they navigate some of life's most difficult challenges. Yet, not every battle is visible, and not every journey reaches the destination we hope for. Some Soldiers fought their final battles while assigned to this unit, displaying a level of courage and perseverance that words can scarcely capture.
Through the dedication and craftsmanship of the UBC Military Veterans Program, the SRU now has a permanent place of remembrance—a beautiful and meaningful memorial wall dedicated to the lives lived, the uniforms worn, and the sacrifices made. More than a structure, it is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Soldiers it honors. These fallen heroes are a permanent part of the Soldier Recovery Unit's history, and their memory will be carried forward in everything the unit does. The memorial serves as a place for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude, ensuring that future generations understand the sacrifices made by those who answered our nation's call.

Through the Military Veterans Program, we help transitioning service members build new careers in the skilled trades, but opportunities like this remind us that our mission extends beyond workforce development. Our veterans and active-duty service members have carried the burden of defending the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today. The men and women memorialized by this wall answered their nation's call without hesitation, placing service above self and exemplifying the highest ideals of duty, honor, and selfless sacrifice.
The MVP team was deeply humbled to be entrusted with such a meaningful project. Contributing our skills to create a place of reflection and remembrance for these heroes was both an honor and a responsibility we will carry with great pride. We are profoundly grateful for the opportunity to support the Soldier Recovery Unit in this effort, and we are equally humbled by the unit's trust in our members and staff. We are especially thankful for the kind words shared by the SRU, whose leaders noted that this memorial would not have been possible without the dedication, craftsmanship, and commitment of the carpenters and staff who brought this vision to life.
