Azie Taylor Morton
Trailblazer as First African American U.S. Treasurer

Azie Taylor Morton (1936–2003) was a prominent Austin-based civil servant and the first and only African American to ever serve as the Treasurer of the United States.

In 1961, she famously participated in “swim-ins” at Barton Springs pool, defying the segregationist policies of the era.

Graduating from Huston-Tillotson College (now University), Morton moved to Washington, D.C., where she served in various capacities, including foreign affairs, the Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity, the Democratic National Committee, and the U.S. House District Committee.

In 1977, she was appointed U.S. treasurer by President Jimmy Carter and served until 1981.

Happy Black History Month - Take a moment to learn about Dr. W Charles Akins 🦅

Dr. William Charles Akins
Longtime educator, activist, and district administrator.

Dr. William Charles Akins dedicated most of his life to Austin ISD. He was the first African American high school teacher to work after the desegregation of AISD in 1964 and became the first principal at the new L.C Anderson High school in 1973.

Growing up in East Austin, Akins always wanted to be a teacher, attributing this to his teachers’ and principals’ influences on him as a child.

He attended Blackshear Elementary School, Kealing Junior High school, and L.C Anderson High School before getting his bachelor’s degree in history from Huston-Tillotson University, a historically black college in Austin, Texas, going on to get his master’s degree from Prairie View A&M University.

He would then move on to be the first principal at the new L.C Anderson during federally mandated school busing racial integration.

Akins always advocated for the African American community breaking color barriers in education and more.

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees named a high school in honor of Akins. Akins passed away in 2017. He was 84.
