TODAY IS NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY! This day is observed across the nation on the third Friday in September each year. The POW/MIA flag symbolizes the nation's remembrance of those who were imprisoned while serving in conflicts and those who remain missing. According to the National League of POW/MIA Families, as of August 22, 2026, there are still 1,565 personnel still unaccounted for.

For decades, we have seen the resilience and courage of those who were captured as prisoners of war, and we honor the commitment of the families who anxiously await the return of their loved ones. We encourage you to take a moment today to remember their remarkable bravery and sacrifice.

2026 Veterans Writing Workshop

​The 14th Annual Outer Banks Veterans Writing Workshop will be held at the Coastal Studies Institute, ECU Outer Banks Campus in Wanchese from 9:30am to 3:30pm on Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15.
Participants will learn about the hallmarks of creative writing, participate in a writing workshop, and engage with revision techniques as it relates to their own personal storytelling. They will work with Dario DiBattista, instructor for the Veterans Writing Project, and their peers on gaining new knowledge and writing and revision skills. Beginner and experienced writers are invited to participate in this special workshop that is free for veterans, active-duty military and their family members.

At the Outer Banks VFW Post 10950 meeting on July 6th Commander Justin O'Sullivan presented retiring Quartermaster James E. Norrell, Jr. with a letter summarizing his service and achievements as QM for the past 36 years.
Jim modestly thanked the Commander and members as he received a standing ovation.

At the Outer Banks VFW Post 10950 meeting on July 6th, Commander Justin O'Sullivan presented former commander Kevin Ryan with a letter and certificate from VFW National Headquarters recognizing his outstanding leadership and dedicated service during the past two years.

Dirt Cafe in Columbia, Tyrell County treated members of Outer Banks VFW Post 10950 and other area veterans from VFWNC District One to an appreciation dinner on June 24th. A hearty thank you for this great event!
