Do you know what these are? They’re called nurdles — tiny pre‑production plastic beads used to make almost every plastic product you can think of. They may look small and harmless, but these little pellets are showing up everywhere, including right on our beaches.

During a recent beach cleanup, Sydney, our volunteer coordinator, spotted these nurdles scattered in the sand right next to Jennette’s Pier. Even in places that look clean at first glance, these plastic pellets blend in with shells and pebbles, making them easy to miss but impossible to ignore once you know what they are.

Why does it matter?

• These beads spill easily during manufacturing and transport, eventually washing into rivers and oceans.

• Marine animals often mistake them for food, which can lead to starvation or internal injury.

• Nurdles absorb toxins from the water, and when wildlife ingests them, those toxins move up the food chain.

• Over time they break down into microplastics, adding to one of the world’s fastest‑growing environmental problems.

Finding nurdles at places like Jennette’s Pier is a reminder that even protected or well‑maintained coastlines are impacted by global plastic pollution.

4 chances to make a wave of difference this month as part of and !

The recent nor’easter left a lot of trash and debris washed up across our beaches. Huge shoutout to everyone who has already jumped in to help sweep the shore! Your hard work has made a difference, but there is still plenty of work to be done.

What a day at the Which Craft Surf competition! 🏄‍♂️✨

We had the best time cheering on the surfers and keeping our beaches clean! The wildest find was a sign from the Eastern Shore of Virginia that washed all the way up in Kitty Hawk! It's a stark reminder of just how far ocean currents can carry trash and marine debris across state lines.

We rather pick up shells —because they are the only kind of treasures we ought to be finding on our shores! 🌊🐚💙

🧤 Help Keep Kitty Hawk Clean! 🌊♻️

Grab your gloves and community spirit and join the Town of Kitty Hawk Community Trash Clean Up on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to noon!

Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome. All cleanup supplies will be provided, so all you need to bring is your willingness to lend a hand. After the cleanup, volunteers are invited to enjoy a free lunch as a thank-you for helping keep Kitty Hawk beautiful.

A couple of hours can make a big difference. Bring a friend, bring the family, and come help us take care of the community we all enjoy.
