On This Day, October 8, 1943, Benjamin O. Davis Jr. took command of the 332nd Fighter Group at Selfridge Field, Michigan.

He had just returned from leading the 99th Fighter Squadron in combat in North Africa and Sicily. Back in the United States, he also had to defend the squadron against officers who questioned its performance and wanted it removed from combat. Davis brought the record of the men who had flown those missions to Washington and made their case.

Now he was responsible for preparing a larger group of Tuskegee Airmen for war. The 332nd would deploy to Italy and eventually bring the 99th together with the 100th, 301st, and 302nd Fighter Squadrons under his command.

What do you think he was feeling?

Did you know Wilbur and Orville Wright had a St. Bernard named Scipio?
They loved their furry friend! He was a part of their family and went everywhere with the brothers.

We welcome pets at Wright Brothers National Memorial asking that you follow the B.A.R.K Ranger principles:
B. Bag your pet's waste: Help keep our park clean by bagging your pet waste and disposing it in trashcans.
A. Always use a leash: Pets must always be on a leash of no more than six feet.
R. Respect wildlife: Please keep your pets at a respectful distance to all wildlife in the park.
K. Know where you can go with your pet: plan ahead and know where you can take your pet.

Wright Brothers National Memorial offers a program for your four-legged friend to become an official B.A.R.K Ranger!
