OBX locals: Our friends at Cape Hatteras National Seashore are hiring! 🌊

We’re hiring locally! Join our team at Cape Hatteras National Seashore as a Commercial and Special Uses Coordinator (Job 1) or a Maintenance Worker Leader (Job 2) through our Local Hiring Authority, open to eligible community members living within 50 miles of Manteo (Job 1) or Ocracoke (Job 2).

📅 Applications open through 11:59 p.m. on June 29.

In the Commercial and Special Uses Coordinator role, stationed in Manteo, you’ll manage commercial use, commercial filming, special events and other park uses which are required by law to be permitted by the superintendent.

Happy Juneteenth!

Today we celebrate Juneteenth! On this day in 1865, Major General Gordan Granger issued General Orders No. 3, freeing all those still enslaved three years after the Emancipation Proclamation. General Granger had been sent to Galveston, Texas to help ensure the transition to federal control was a smooth one. The announcement was met with celebration in the streets of Galveston. In the following weeks, more troops arrived in Texas to help with this transition. Among those arriving were several men from the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony, who were now serving in the 36th Infrantry of the United States Colored Troops. How fitting that some of those first liberated men were there to ensure that the last people left enslaved were freed.

Raise your flipper if you're excited about World Sea Turtle Day! 🐢

Did you know you can symbolically adopt an active sea turtle nest on Cape Hatteras National Seashore through our Adopt A Sea Turtle Nest program? When you adopt a nest, you will receive an adoption certificate and information about your specific nest when it hatches later this summer or fall!

Here's how our program works:

🎁Donate: Give a tax-deductible donation of $100 or more to reserve your sea turtle nest. Your gift will help us fund important projects that protect and enhance the Seashore and the vital sea turtle habitat it preserves. You'll receive a confirmation email for your donation.

🐢Receive your nest assignment: As nests become available, you will be assigned a nest and will receive an adoption certificate by mail or email with initial information about your nest. Nests are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

⏰Wait patiently for your nest to hatch! When your nest hatches later this summer or fall (the average incubation time for our nests is 61 days), you will receive a personalized update with information Seashore biologists collect about your nest, including the number of hatchlings that made their way out to sea!

Happy National Trails Day!

Every year, the first Saturday in June is celebrated as National Trails Day. If you need a place to celebrate the outdoors, Fort Raleigh has two great trails to explore:

🥾 The Thomas Hariot Trail is a 0.3-mile loop through maritime forest with views of the Albermarle Sound to the east. Signs along the trail discuss the habitat and history of the area.

🥾 The Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile out and back trail to the Croatoan Sound on the west side of the island. The trail goes through maritime forest, and marshland with signs along the trail telling the story of the Roanoke Island Freedmen's Colony.
