Kihei Greenways

Kihei Greenways Kihei Greenways is a group of concerned citizens and business owners who share a common vision of a future Kihei where we can all walk or bike comfortably.

Formed in February 2014, Kihei Greenways (KG) is a is a rapidly growing coalition of volunteers and professionals within the Kihei community who plan and advocate for safe, equitable, and comfortable streets connecting us to the places we use, whether we walk, drive, ride a bike, push a stroller, or move by wheelchair. Imagine your neighborhood, knitted together with quiet residential streets wher

e children and adults safely walk, ride bicycles, play and run. Imagine these streets are close to where you live and connect you to the places you want to go — the grocery store, your favorite coffee shop, your community center, your child’s school. Imagine traveling along a whole Kihei-wide network of streets designed first for children and adults who are walking and biking.

KIHEI COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION (KCA) MONTHLY MEETING THIS TUESDAY ( 2/17/15)

On Tuesday (2/17/15) evening at 6:30 PM the Kihei Community Association (KCA) welcomes Public Works Director David Goode to our general membership meeting, open to the public. He will discuss his plans for the next four years for sidewalks, bike-paths and lanes, as well as roads for South Maui. Audience questions are welcomed

KCA asks, “Will the North-South Collector Road ever be constructed? Is the land still available? When will Kihei get its second roundabout? Why does development construction continue while infrastructure lags way behind? What can the community do to foster safer conditions? These and any more issues of concern have been presented to David Goode already, so he has time to investigate , then offer answers to KCA on Tuesday

Non perishable donations for the Maui Food Bank are strongly requested. Meetings are open to the public, but membership is encouraged. For over half a century, the KCA has worked to improve quality of life for the South Maui Community. Doors open at 6:00 PM for pupu and socialization; meeting begins “on time” at 6:30 PM. Location is the Kihei Charter Middle School, 41 E. Lipoa (Previous site of Hapa’s nightclub.)

Now that Hawaii is officially implementing protected bike lanes on arterial streets, perhaps there's hope for a protected bike lane the entire length of S Kihei Road from Kealia Pond to the Grand Wailea. Imagine everybody being able to get around Kihei without having to drive a car or be driven.

Opening a new Honolulu protected bike lane. Dignified, culturally appropriate, and fun!

Wendy, the Willing-But-Wary bicycle rider is who we keep in mind when we think about biking or walking routes for people of all-ages-and-abilities. If our planned network is good enough for Wendy, it's going to satisfy the needs of most citizens. Please read through the Wendy persona in detail. Wendy informs our every decision and perspective.

Meet Wendy. Wendy is afraid to ride in traffic so she seldom gets her bike out of the garage today. Wendy occasionally drives to the Burke-Gilman Trail to ride her bike with her kids and wishes she had safe places to ride closer to home. Wendy longs for the day when her children can ride their bikes...

Maui County is committed to building multi-use trails to give people transportation and recreation options for many reasons (fun, togetherness, community, health, economy, practicality, equity). NPAC, David Goode from Public Works of Maui County, Mayor Alan Arakawa, Walter Enomoto of Maui Bicycle Alliance, Irene Bowie from Maui Tomorrow Foundation, Maui County Council Member Mike White all speak about their experience implementing the 7 mile Northshore Greenway (multi-use trail). The main delay was caused by fear, uncertainty and doubt by uninformed communities, not by money or willingness from the county.

If we, the community, can get organized and engage David Goode from the Maui County Dept of Public Works, we should be able to get our multi-use trails completed in far less time than the decades it took to get the Northshore Greenway implemented.

What can the County of Maui do to help the average bicycle rider? How about build a bicycle path system. The planned 7 mile path from Kahului to Paia is still not finished after 21 years! If we wa...

A complete network of excellent biking and walking routes, designed to be irresistable for people of all ages and abilities, could help solve the island roadway congestion issue in our communities.

With crowded island roadways in residential areas and crumbling bridges in rural areas, plus high-speed ferries plowing the waters between harbors operating at full capacity, transportation issues ...
