`Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has dedicated itself to revitalizing Ko`ie`ie Fishpond in South Maui, Hawai`i for educational, archaeological, cultural and recreational purposes. We feel that this fishpond is a symbol of the Hawaiian culture and history. Therefore, it must be preserved as a monument to Hawai`i’s past and an icon for the future. It is a cultu

ral landmark tucked away in the growing community of Kihei in South Maui where many are unaware of its significance. `Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui is working to change this. We are working with the community to bring the historical and cultural life back to a land-mark which has been living quietly for too long.

On the weekend of March 14th, Maui suffered devastating flooding due to a Kona storm. Our fishpond and the adjacent properties, including the park where we conduct education visits, was heavily impacted and a large amount of the park washed away into our pond and surrounding waters.

It will take months, if not years, to recover from this tragic event. Our nonprofit humbly requests that if you'd like to support our organiztion and recovery efforts, we are accepting donations at https://mauifishpondassociation.org/donate.

Mahalo.

Hui! It's time to put on our slippahs and go HOLOHOLO FO DA LOKO (Walk for the Pond)!

Our non-profit is walking in the 2025 Maui Charity Walk and we'd love to have you join us or donate towards our cause. In addition to the money that we raise by wonderful supporters like yourselves, the Maui Visitor Industry Charity Walk will also make a donation to us. The more we raise, the more we earn from the Charity Walk. So we can use all the help we can get!

To get in on the fun and go holoholo with us or to make your tax-deductible donation, visit our charity walk fundraiser page at

An ancient mo‘olelo (legend) states that Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond in South Maui was built overnight by legendary menehune. Menehune were known to have extraordinary skills, strength and were famous for building massive Hawaiian rock structures such as fishponds and heiau (temples) under the blanket of just one dark night.

Today, we don’t necessarily see menehune take action, but we have amazing kia‘i loko i‘a. They’re the skilled rock wall builders who are revitalizing Hawaiian fishponds throughout Hawai‘i. In June, Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond was blessed to have these modern-day menehune lend a hand. Within just 2 hours, these skilled men and women helped us restore over 60 feet of our wall which had been severely damaged by storms earlier in the year. Mahalo nui to Hui Mālama Loko I‘a for gracing us with your talents, skills, strength and positive mana. Our kūpuna and ancient menehune were definitely smiling on us that day!

Kō‘ie‘ie Fishpond in South Maui has become the home for resident honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) which grace the walls of this ancient Hawaiian site. If you’re visiting the area, please respect our honu and their home and maintain at least a distance of 10 feet away from them. The turtles are resting and feeding. Please be mindful of your actions and respect our marine life. Mahalo!

Many visit this site in Kīhei, Maui to enjoy its shallow protected waters and to see the Hawaiian green sea turtles that have made the kuapā (rock wall) their daily resting area. But did you know that this is actually the wall of an ancient Hawaiian fishpond? Please help us respect this treasured location in South Maui by not disturbing the kuapā and the life within it.
