What makes a place feel like home?

In a recent New York Times feature, Andie MacDowell reflects on finding that sense of belonging here on Kiawah Island. She describes a life surrounded by local treasures and the island's maritime forest.

Several shorebird species, including Wilson’s Plovers, Least Terns, Willets, and American Oystercatchers, are currently nesting on our beach at the east and west ends of the island. 🪺 These nests are particularly vulnerable, as the camouflaged eggs are laid directly in the sand. To protect these important colonies, our Town Biologists have clearly marked the nesting areas with bright yellow signs. We kindly ask that you respect all boundaries and observe from a distance. ⚠️

Did you know KICA invests over $1 million annually to keep Kiawah's drainage system in top shape? This extensive system includes roadway drainage, 122 interconnected ponds, and outfall structures that direct water into the Kiawah River.

Additionally, the association recently completed a major drainage improvement project to address the island's most significant flooding vulnerabilities.

The Kiawah Island Community Association maintains community common areas and landscapes, monitors and maintains the pond and drainage systems, and oversees the upkeep and safety of roads, trails, and boardwalks inside the Main Gate.
