organized, initially, in 2010, to erect a public memorial in honor of the Black Educators of Frederick Douglass School from 1871 – 1965 who shared their diverse cultural backgrounds with their students. This is still its primary goal. However, the Memorial Project has come now to be seen as a catalyst to engender pride and to provoke opportunities for the Key West community, especially for the rem
aining members of Bahama Village and surrounding areas, and those descendants who live in other cities in Florida, states, and countries. It is invested, as well, in preserving the indigenous culture and traditions of the African/Bahamian/Cuban American heritage and in serving as a model for programs for children & youth, for families, and the elderly that create opportunities for more cooperation, communication, and collaboration among the members of the community.
