SOS Foundation

SOS Foundation Having operated a 365-day per year soup kitchen in Key West for over 39 years, we became acutely aware of the epidemic of hunger in our community.

We are a non-profit that is committed to enhancing the lives of low-income families in Monroe County through our food pantries, nutrition education program, and community kitchen. Our goal at the Star of the Sea Foundation (SOS) is simple: increase the health and well-being of low-income individuals and families in Monroe County, Florida. The Star of the Sea Outreach Mission (SOS) was founded in 2

006 as a client-choice food pantry that aims to enhance the health of our community by providing fresh produce and nutritious foods to the working-poor in Monroe County, Florida. We responded to this problem with a food pantry that has since grown to be one of the largest in all of South Florida. In the early days of operation, we distributed pre-selected bags of canned and packaged items, although we quickly realized this system was not sensitive to individual’s cultural or dietary needs. SOS now operates a client-choice food pantry, and much like at a traditional grocery store, clients are allowed to select foods their families need. This in turn, leads to not only more satisfied customers but also a reduction in food waste. As one of the largest pantries in South Florida, SOS currently distributes fresh produce, meats, dairy products, breads, and canned goods to over 9,000 unduplicated individuals each year as well as 35 different agencies that serve children, veterans, seniors, and the homeless. Utilizing primarily volunteer support, SOS distributes 1,500,000 pounds of food annually to these underserved populations. As nutrition and healthy eating are both key focuses of our organization, more than 50% of the food we distribute is fresh produce. And recently SOS has expanded its efforts with helping the community through the community kitchen and nutrition education programs. Executive Director: Thomas M. Callahan

As summer begins, we officially wrapped up our Smart Sprouts spring semester this past week with a special field trip to our SOS Eco Farm! Students had the opportunity to see firsthand how our aeroponic towers work, explore everything we’re growing for the summer season, and learn about the unique barriers of farming in the Keys.

To top it all off, students enjoyed a farm-to-table experience where they harvested fresh basil and bell peppers straight from the farm to create a delicious basil hummus, an instant favorite!

It has been such a rewarding semester watching our students learn, grow, and build confidence in the classroom and beyond. We are so proud of all they’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what next school year brings!

Swipe to see all of our Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) Congregate sites starting next week! ☀️🍎

Congregate food sites are locations that will be serving breakfast, lunch, or snacks ON SITE! This means any child can come to these sites during meal service times and enjoy a free meal on location.

What’s the difference between our congregate and non-congregate sites?

➡️ Congregate sites: Meals are eaten ON SITE during designated meal service times.

➡️ Non-congregate sites: Meals are “grab-and-go” style and include shelf-stable or frozen meals that can be taken home.

Any child can visit these locations during the posted times to receive meals for free!

If you have any questions about our SFSP program or site locations, please don’t hesitate to message us or email [email protected]

Each meal pack includes:
🥣 2 shelf-stable breakfast kits
🥪 2 grab-and-go lunches

Our Smart Sprouts semester is coming to an end and we’re wrapping up the school year with a hands-on snack lesson where the kids got to make their own sweet and savory healthy rice cakes!

This is one of the students’ favorite lessons because they get to put their creativity and kitchen skills to the test by making their own snack right in class! We’re so sad this Smart Sprouts semester is coming to an end soon, but so grateful to be part of the journey.💚 We loved helping students learn about nutrition, agriculture, and introducing them to healthy, delicious snacks throughout the semester 🍓

We want to give a huge thank you to the Ocean Reef Community Foundation for being an ongoing supporter of ours year after year! Thanks to their generosity, we have received $50,000 in funding for our St. Justin’s Food Pantry that helps support and strengthen our hunger relief programs in the community.

This partnership has become such an important part of the work we do in Key Largo. Because of the continued support from the Ocean Reef Community Foundation, we are able to continue serving individuals and families week after week at our pantry.

We are incredibly grateful for your commitment to our mission and for being such a strong supporter of hunger relief in Key Largo. We truly love working alongside everyone at the Foundation and cannot wait to see the continued impact this funding will have on our community!
