Good afternoon Key West Folks!
I'm looking forward to another great Lesson and Session on Wednesday. We had a great session last week, and it was fun to have some new folks join us and share the music they love. Let's keep that same great energy and enjoy ourselves this week also. :-)

From 6:00 - 7:00 we will continue with the third lesson in our series on Ear Training. This week, we're going to the Dark Side and exploring the II and VI chords. These chords unlock the Secret to being able to play THOUSANDS of well-known songs that share a common source that musicians have used for centuries. I guarantee that this Secret will amaze you and make you smile.

At 7:00 we'll have our "no musician left behind" portion of the session. We'll start with some easy tunes from our Repertoire and go over some songs and tunes from the last two weeks. I'd propose that we review:
- Poor wayfairing stranger (Mimi, you played this in the key of A minor, right?)
- The New Land
- Planxty Morgan Meghan
- Feliz Navidad - can we add in some instrumental solo breaks - would make a (kind of boring) song more interesting, lol !

We have a holiday fundraiser coming up on Sunday the 19th for anyone who cares to stop by Fausto's on Fleming and playing some tunes with us. If there are enough people interested in doing this, we'll spend some time this Wednesday practicing some holiday tunes.

Finally, we'll have the "no holds barred" session from 8 to 9. I really liked the guitar-driven jam that evolved out of nowhere last week - maybe it will put in an appearance this week also. :-)

See you Wednesday!

Jeff

Next Lesson & Session: 12-1-21

Join us Wednesday for our weekly Folk Lesson & Session at Williams Hall from 6 - 9 pm. The evening is split into three portions:

* 6pm - 7pm Lesson: We're continuing to focus on teaching the skills that help musicians to "play by ear" and have fun playing in a group/jam setting. This week we will have the second in our series of lessons on how to hear what key is being played in, hearing chord changes and how to quickly play along with them.

* 7pm - 8pm Slow Session: During this hour, our motto is "No musician left behind". We'll warm up with some easy, humorous songs, then go 'round the circle and choose songs from the ones we already know. (See the "Repertoire" section of our website at www.FolkKeyWest.org/Repertoire ) We'll keep a relaxed pace so that everyone can enjoy playing along. Since it's the holiday season, we'll also learn to play a few new songs, Christmas Island (a great song for ukulele!), Let it snow ("somewhere else!") and the Gloucestershire Wassail (hey, who doesn't like a good drinking song?!) . This is a great time to share your favorites from your traditions with all of us.

* 8pm - 9pm 'round the Circle: During the last hour of the evening, we'll move to a faster pace and free-form style. Feel free to call out any tune or song you like as we go 'round the circle, not just the ones in our existing repertoire. This is the part of the evening where students can practice the skills they learned in the first hour on how to play up-to-speed and participate in an acoustic jam. The faster pace and variety of this hour also lets more experienced musicians find some challenges that help to hone their skills.

Please drop us a note if you're attending for the first time, and/or if you're planning on attending the 6pm class. (We want to know how many class handouts to print.)

Best regards,

Jeff and Rachel

Good morning Folks!
Just a quick reminder that we'll be teaching the first lesson in a three-part series on learning to play by ear. Tonight, we will learn the "Nashville numbering system" for music notation, how to hear chord changes and how to tell what key a song is being played in. Lessons run from 6:00 to 7:00 before our regular session. If you're arriving for the 7:00 session, please wait outside the Learning Center room until we're done with the lesson. See you tonight!

Hi Folks!
We'll continue our regular Wednesday evening Lessons & Sessions at Williams Hall from 7-9. We'll start the session with a fun song from a folk revival artist that you may know better in his role as a singing snowman. (I should have some kind of prize for folks who solve this riddle!)

We will learn several new tunes including Midnight on the Water, Joys of Quebec and Off to California, and have plenty of time to play your requests from our growing repertoire of songs and tunes that we've learned in past sessions. As always, we love it when you call a tune as we go 'round the circle.

You can find full details at our website at www.FolkKeyWest.org

Come and share the music you love to play!

Join us this Thursday 10/28 at 7:00 for another evening of home made music at Williams Hall.

This week we are featuring a Bahamian folk song that is familiar to almost everyone, yet you thought it was a pop/rock song from the early 60's. (the attached photo is a hint) In addition to learning to play it, you will learn the lost lyrics that make the whole thing make sense. We will also revisit the Irish jigs and fiddle tunes we started learning last week and, as always, bring a song or tune that you want to share as we go 'round the circle.

Full details are on our website at www.FolkKeyWest.org

To all attending this evening's Folk Lesson & Session,
I'm looking forward to meeting you all, and an evening of fun and music. Our entrance to Williams Hall is the small door on the side street (William St.), not the big wooden doors. You'll see a sign with our Folk Key West logo on it.

See you there!
