Join us in congratulating The Honorable Migna Sanchez Llorens, the recipient of Mattie Belle Davis Award.

Mattie Belle Davis was the only woman in Florida to pass the Florida Bar Examination in 1936.  In 1959, she was appointed to the Metropolitan Court of Dade County, which later was absorbed into the county court system of Dade County.  She retired from the bench in 1980 but continued to serve as a retired judge until 1996.  Judge Davis was a founding member of (State) FAWL in 1951 and led the organization as President in 1957‑58.  She also served as President of the National Association of Women Lawyers in 1965-66. She was passionate about and committed to FAWL, serving as the organization’s Historian until her death in January, 2004.
 
This award honors the legacy of Judge Mattie Belle Davis, a trailblazer for women in the legal profession and a dedicated leader in FAWL.

A big thank you to each of you who make it out to Mentorship Monday at Bartaco in the Grove.  It was so great to see some new faces and to welcome back so many of you who’ve been attending these since our kickoff in September.
 
We had some major MDFAWL star power in the room: Judge Miller of the Third DCA; our former MDFAWL president Elisa D’Amico; co-chair of MDFAWL’s corporate counsel committee and former board member Schuyler Smith; our pro bono committee chair Karen Ladis; incoming board member and co-chair of MDFAWL’s corporate counsel committee Lauren Brunswick; and our incoming president Ally Leonard.

On March 25, 2026, the Women’s Leadership Academy, a collaboration between the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers and the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association (gscbwla) hosted an inspiring lunch program at gt_law focused on Confidence Building, Lessons Learned, Dealing with Difficult Personalities, and Getting Ahead.

This year’s Academy is led by Co-Chairs MDFAWL Past Presidents Angela Benjamin and Amber Kornreich alongside incoming GSCBWLA President Domini Gibbs-Sorey and WLA Alumna Mallorie Milord.

Domini Gibbs-Sorey and Mallorie Milord co-moderated an engaging discussion featuring an exceptional panel: Devon Vickers, Lindsey Lazopoulos Friedman, Sandra York, and Nancy Wears. The conversation offered practical strategies, candid reflections, and meaningful guidance for navigating challenges in leadership and advancing with purpose as a leader in the community.

Our Fellows left energized and ready to step into new leadership roles with confidence and authenticity.
