We are going before the full board of Village of Kewaskum tonight.
In a time of ‘development’ in our town of 4000, the invitation is to notice the sacred River that runs through us and plan for its care, now and for its care, 7 generations from now.
Our community was founded on this River 137 yrs ago We are a part of its fragile eco-system, not separate from it.
Rivers need buffers for habitat to survive, lest we experience eco collapse where the vitality of our community will end.
It is a River … not a pond, not a lake, moving constantly, a most soothing experience to our souls at a time of auspicious change. Stay close to her in order to thrive.
No one owns waterfront property along a River, although developers might see this differently. The River unites us with other communities…very important!!
Inviting our community trustees to plan and make policies for the River’s protection and care to include easements, conservancy, Bioswales and other water infiltration strategies to ensure only the water from rain makes it to the River in its intended purest state on all River shore land in the Village.
Proposing a water edge nature trail to run through our community along the River as well, connecting it to other pathways for a connected community,… a community that thrives with all members of this eco-system, including the smallest of creatures and the medicinal plants that line its borders.
We have been caring for our River here in an organized way since 2009 and continue to do so with the involvement of three organizations…Milwaukee Riverkeeper, Riveredge Nature Center, and Bridget Center.
When an out of town developer comes in, they are not concerned with the infrastructure of the community with regard to our ecosystem, nor the sustainability
of our local skilled trades people who know how to build and care for all parts of the whole.
It’s time for a shift… I invite us all to experience our selves as “indigenous”. This means we are a part of the land we stand on, no longer descendants of immigrants from somewhere else. It can no longer be a story of extraction but instead…
TO LIVE IN GRATITUDE FOR THIS LAND AND TO RECIPROCATE IN HER CARE.
Time to consider a new tagline…
No longer …”the gateway to somewhere else”
No longer… “where they used to make pots and pans”
No longer… “where people drive through but rarely stop
Instead…
We ARE
“KEWASKUM… a River
runs through us!”
