Amplifying Kettleman City's very own, comrade/brother/hermano Brian Cadena ~
"Toxic Waste Is NOT for the Poor.
As a lifelong resident of Kettleman City and an advocate for health and environmental justice, I am disgusted by the recent protest at the Calabasas Landfill, where individuals—including public figures Kourtney Kardashian and Kendra Wilkinson—held signs suggesting that toxic waste should be dumped in Kettleman Hills and Buttonwillow instead of their own communities.
This is a blatant display of environmental racism. Communities like Kettleman City and Buttonwillow have long been used as toxic dumping grounds, subjected to hazardous waste, industrial pollution, and decades of neglect—all because we are small, rural, and predominantly working-class Latino communities.
For years, we have fought for our right to clean air, safe water, and a healthy environment. Yet, time and time again, we see privileged communities mobilizing—not to stop pollution, but to ensure it is sent elsewhere, to places they deem less valuable.
Let me be clear: NO community deserves to be a sacrifice zone. We refuse to be treated as dumping grounds for the waste that wealthier areas refuse to deal with. Our children deserve the same protection as theirs.
This is why I co-founded UNIDOS Network, to fight for the dignity, health, and rights of frontline communities. We will continue to speak up, organize, and demand environmental justice.
To those who think it’s acceptable to send their toxic waste to Kettleman Hills and Buttonwillow: We see you, and we will not be silent.
