Volunteers Needed for a Research Study
“The Effect of Heat on Balance, Gait, and Brain Function”
The purpose of the research study is to increase our understanding of how exposure to
heat impacts balance, walking, and cognition (brain function).
Time commitment is 3-4 hours over one or two study visits.
The study is open to healthy, male, full-time firefighters, age 30 to 35 years old.
Volunteers must meet the following guidelines:
Able to undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination
No type of electronic, mechanical, or magnetic implant, metal objects, or foreign
body (e.g., BB, bullet, shrapnel, metallic slivers) in the body
No history of cardiac disease, neurological disease or condition, psychiatric
disorders, or substance abuse
Not claustrophobic
Weigh less than 300 lbs.
Participants that qualify will undergo imaging of their head and brain with Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI). During the imaging, participants will be asked to do several
decision-making tasks. Participants will also undergo balance and walking tests while
wearing body motion sensors. A blood sample will be drawn to test for immune function.
Participants will receive $50 for participating in the study plus $50 for the blood draw
(total $100 in prepaid debit cards).
The research will be conducted at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and at
the University of Cincinnati Medical Campus.
