Join us for June’s MUSEUM PASSPORT lecture, featuring an in-person conversation with curator and museum leader Ali Gass and curator and cultural advisor Matthew Thompson as they discuss the evolving landscape of contemporary art spaces.

From nomadic museums to immersive, site-responsive installations, this conversation dives into how artists and curators are breaking the mold, reimagining what a museum can be, how it can move, and how it can meaningfully engage audiences beyond traditional gallery walls.

Ali Gass, founding director and chief curator of ICA San Francisco, is known for championing artist-driven, experimental models of exhibition-making and public engagement across leading contemporary art institutions.

Matthew Thompson works at the intersection of art, landscape, and architecture, creating large-scale, experiential projects that transform environments into dynamic cultural encounters. His work includes major site-based programming at Powder Mountain with the Powder Art Foundation and collaborations with internationally recognized artists.

Expect a lively, forward-looking conversation about where contemporary art is headed—and what happens when the museum itself becomes an evolving idea.

🎬 Art on Film at Merlin’s Magic Lantern 🎬

Join SVMoA on Wednesday, June 3 at 5 PM for a special screening of Hard Twist: Through the Lens of Barbara Van Cleve, a powerful documentary exploring the life and work of renowned western photographer Barbara Van Cleve.

A fifth-generation Montanan, Barbara Van Cleve captured the spirit, labor, and sisterhood of ranch life through photographs that helped redefine how the American West is seen. Featuring archival footage and iconic imagery from the Lazy K Bar Ranch, the film offers an intimate portrait of an artist deeply connected to the land and culture that shaped her.

Following the screening, Wood River Valley local and executive producer Felicitas Funke will join us for a conversation about the film.

Join us this Thursday, May 21 at 5:30pm for an evening exhibition tour of Memory of a Future Once Imagined, on view through June 10, 2026.

Curated by Erin Joyce, this exhibition is the third and final installment in SVMoA’s Landscapes of Migration series, exploring the intersections of migration, memory, nostalgia, and time. Through photographic installation, video, sound, painting, and sculpture, participating artists challenge Western ideas of linear time and embrace expansive continuums of culture, history, and human movement.

The exhibition features newly commissioned works by artist, writer, and activist Demian DinéYazhi’, whose multidisciplinary practice spans photography, sculpture, text, sound, installation, performance, and street art. Born in Gallup, New Mexico, DinéYazhi’ is a member of the Naasht'ézhí Tábąąhá (Zuni Clan Water's Edge) and Tódích'íí'nii (Bitter Water) clans of the Diné (Navajo). Their work centers Indigenous sovereignty, land, intergenerational knowledge, and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

✨Join a tour with Courtney Gilbert, curator, and pick up a limited-edition poster designed by Demian DinéYazhi’.

In honor of , we are proud to share the work of Theaster Gates, whose piece Flag (2017) is currently on view in SVMoA’s exhibition Hidden Gems: Idaho Collects.

Theaster Gates (b.1973) is an American social practice installation artist and a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago. whose work is informed by his experiences growing up in Chicago, as well as the traditions of Japanese ceramics and spiritual philosophy – most notably honoring the “spirit within things”. Gates coined the term “Afro-Mingei” to explore this intersection between African American aesthetics and Japanese spiritual belief.

Much of Gates’ work recontextualizes historic Black objects and images that carry legacies of racism and violence. Flag (2017) is constructed from decommissioned fire hoses used by the Chicago Fire Department, evoking the long and brutal history of fire hoses being deployed by police forces against Civil Rights protesters.

Through his presentation and recontextualization of these objects, Gates honors their enduring spirit by acknowledging the violence embedded in their histories while reframing them within a context of power, dignity, and justice.

As an extension of Gates’ sociocultural artistic practice, his non-profit Rebuild Foundation aims to reignite the arts scenes in under-resourced communities, specifically in the South Side of Chicago where he grew up. With his foundation, he has developed a system of community arts spaces that focus on studio spaces, performance venues, ceramic research, community housing co-ops, and places for discussion and celebration of Black artistry. His impact on the global art world, paired with an unwavering commitment to his community, underscores his artistic mission to use art as a catalyst for community transformation.

Flag will be on view at the Sun Valley Museum of Art in Hidden Gems: Idaho Collects through February 28, 2026.
