Elk County Toastmasters

Elk County Toastmasters Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking & leadership skills http://elkcounty.toastmastersclubs.org

Through its worldwide network of clubs, each week Toastmasters helps more than a quarter of a million men and women of every ethnicity, education level and profession build their competence in communication so they can gain the confidence to lead others. Toastmasters continues to build on its legacy by providing a strong foundation for the future. Its proven educational program continually evolves

to address the needs of the world’s communicators and leaders both today and tomorrow. Toastmasters members learn to tell their story. They listen and answer. They plan and lead. They give feedback – and accept it. Through our community of learners, they find their path to leadership. They do this by practice and learning skills by filling meeting roles, ranging from giving a prepared or an impromptu speech to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian. There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in positive manner, focusing on what was done correctly and what could be improved. Great communicators tend to be great leaders. To find a club near you visit: www.toastmasters.org/findaclub.

It is with much regret that I need to announce that Elk County Toastmasters Club has lost it’s charter and will no longer be able to serve the surrounding area. As a result of the meeting on Aug. 11th, 2025 we have determined that we will be unable to meet the requirement sent forth by Toastmasters International. I have enjoyed serving this community and commend those that did the same throughout the years. My deepest concern lies on the lack of interest from the people of this area, expecting “someone else” to step up and take the lead.
I myself plan on continuing my journey by joining DuBois Toastmasters Club and I would hope that those of you that are still active find a club and continue as well. In our area are DuBois, Altoona, Johnstown, Indiana and State College. Check toastmasters.org if you wish to find another club.

. Elk County Toastmasters has been notified by world headquarters that its status has been “suspended” due to a decline in membership. Toastmasters International decided that in order to ensure quality meetings and club functions a minimum of 12 members is required. Digital communication has become the norm while personal communication subsides even through online meetings have opened clubs to any part of the world. The Elk County club boasts of a very friendly and comfortable venue in which anyone can become a better version of themselves while being entertained in the process Elk County and the surrounding area is about to loss a vital club which has helped produce many civic and industrial leaders. Civic leaders like Norb Arnold, Jim Auman, Don Bleggi, Earl Buchheit, Jeff Buchheit, David Caruso, Dick Dornish, Father Alfred, Doug Gaffey, Bob Leslie, Bob McBride, John Piccolo, Leo Simbeck, Lori Skok, Dan Surra and Anne Grosser(first female member) are just a few of many former members of the local Toastmasters club. Chartered in 1953 as the St. Mary’s Toastmasters Club # 1309, had a huge success for many years until a decline in membership led to an inactive status which resulted in a loss of its charter in 1974. Resurrected in 1992 the Elk County Toastmasters club #5494 has been serving the area ever since. Throughout the years Elk County Toastmaster members have partnered with many organizations to improve themselves and the community. Boy scouts, DECA, 4H, IU9 and the CEC have all benefitted from toastmasters programs that helped to shape both youth and adults within the surrounding area. Many members have accelerated their professional and political careers by becoming a better version of themselves, which in turn creates a better community to reside in.

What is Toastmasters? The opportunity to build more than 300 unique skillset competencies through six specialized learning paths during twice monthly meetings. The opportunity to organize and conduct productive meetings, set agendas, manage people, deliver presentations and most importantly express ideas and opinions with confidence. Learning to communicate through finding and controlling your voice. Toastmasters is a professional development program which focuses on public speaking, their moto however is “Where leaders are made”. Individuals and companies can spend thousands on a professional development course which are excellent curricula but lack one thing, repetition. Without repetition any skill acquired will eventually fade. Celebrating 100 years of making leaders.
Elk Conty Toastmasters is seeking individuals who would like to become a better version of themselves. You can visit www.elkcounty.toastmasterclub.org or call 8148858465 for more information about the organization. It would be a shame to lose such a vital club to this area. The clock is ticking.

At Mondays meeting we had two milestones. First, Tanya Likhatchev ( one of our newest members) gave a very interesting speech about the English language explaining how if plan A fails you still have 25 more tries to get it right. She ended by explaining how a cane became a magic wand. The milestone came as for the first time Tanya nailed the time requirement on her first attempt and did not runover. Second, Cory Straub delivered a speech that had to be repeated for time disqualification also. The speech was a reflection on things learned in his pathways journey. The speech has given him the distinction of level 5 and completion of the path on Motivational Strategies. Next meeting is April 28 @ St. Boniface school or online. Member induction is on tap. Everyone is welcome to attend and see if Toastmasters might be a fit for you.

That’s what leadership is: having a vision, being able to articulate that so that people around you can understand it and getting a consensus on a common vision,” Steven Jobs said in the mid-1980s interview.
Key word here is articulate, Toastmasters International is here to show you how.
