Kerrville’s recovery continues, and it will take all of us.

Kerr Together Long Term Recovery recently spoke to the Kerrville Host Lions Club about our community’s ongoing recovery following the 2025 and 2026 floods.

Todd Bock, Treasurer, and Kelly Hagemeier, Disaster Program Manager, shared updates on long-term recovery efforts, the needs that remain in our community, and the work still ahead.

One message especially stood out: support our local businesses. Recovery isn’t only about rebuilding homes and infrastructure. It’s also about helping our local businesses stay strong as Kerrville continues to recover.

Thank you to Todd, Kelly, and Kerr Together for the important work they are doing for our community and for keeping us informed about how we can help.

During today’s business session, the Kerrville Host Lions Club Foundation was proud to present a $5,000 check to the Doyle Community Center in support of the flood relief efforts they have organized for our community.

These funds were raised through the Kerrville Host Lions Club’s long-standing annual golf tournament, traditionally held at Schreiner Municipal Golf Course.

It’s another example of Lions turning fellowship into service—and putting those dollars right back to work in the community we call home.

LONESTAR HERITAGE TRAILS

Preserving the Texas Way of Life Through Storytelling, Education & Heritage Tourism

Today’s program was presented by Jim McCrae, Founder & CEO of LoneStar Heritage Trails, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the Texas way of life by telling its stories, educating future generations, and promoting heritage tourism.

LoneStar Heritage Trails has developed two TEKS-approved Texas history curricula for 4th and 7th grade students, combining Texas history with character education.

Jim also shared the organization’s work to bring historic sites to life through graphic-based interpretive signage. Embedded QR codes connect visitors to a rich multimedia experience, adding depth and context to the people, places, and events that shaped Texas.

LIVING HISTORY - USS PUEBLA

And speaking of history, KHLC was especially honored to welcome three former crew members of the **USS Pueblo**, who were taken prisoner by North Korea following the ship’s capture in 1968. Their presence was a powerful reminder that history isn’t always found in books—sometimes it is sitting right there in the room with you.

Pregnancy Resource Center

Today’s Kerrville Host Lions Club program featured Lion JJ Johnson, Executive Director of the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC), who has faithfully led the organization for the past four years.

Serving the Kerrville community since 1984, the Pregnancy Resource Center is a Christian-based ministry dedicated to walking alongside women and families facing an unexpected or crisis pregnancy. All services are provided confidentially and at no cost, with a mission to offer hope, support, practical resources, and encourage the choice of life.

Services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, parenting resources, adoption referrals, and connections to additional community support.

The Kerrville Host Lions Club is proud to introduce and welcome our newest member, Lion Ryan Pendergraft.

Ryan was sponsored by Lion Tom Blase, who had the honor of presenting him with his official Lions membership pin and plaque. He was formally sworn in by Past International Director Lion Mike Butler.

Our club continues to grow because of men and women who are committed to serving others and making a difference in our community. We are excited to have Ryan join us in that mission.

Thank you to Deb Rouse, Executive Director of the Kerrville Folk Festival, and her spouse, Lindsey Lee, for speaking to the Kerrville Host Lions Club today.

Deb and Lindsey provided an engaging look at the rich history of the Kerrville Folk Festival, shared updates on recent developments, and highlighted the tremendous economic impact the festival continues to have on Kerrville and the surrounding Hill Country.

For more than five decades, the festival has brought together musicians, artists, volunteers, and visitors from across the country, contributing not only to our local economy but also to the unique cultural identity that makes Kerrville such a special place.

We appreciate Deb and Lindsey taking the time to share their insights and their passion for this treasured community tradition. Thank you for helping us better understand the important role the Kerrville Folk Festival plays in our region.

Today’s program was presented by Jeff Cunningham, Director of Visual and Performing Arts at Schreiner University.

Jeff reminded us that The Point Theatre, owned and operated by the Hill Country Arts Foundation, is the oldest outdoor theater in Texas—a testament to the deep roots of the arts in the Texas Hill Country. He also discussed the significant damage sustained by The Point and other arts venues during the 2025 flood.

He highlighted the many outstanding arts opportunities available right here in our community, including:

• The Point Theatre
• Playhouse 2000
• Cailloux Theater
• Shakespeare in the Park

Jeff then turned his attention to the importance of arts advocacy and the tremendous benefits the arts bring to a community. Beyond entertainment, participation in the arts develops confidence, communication skills, creativity, and self-expression.

Perhaps most importantly, he emphasized that theater teaches empathy. Actors must approach every role with a desire to understand another person’s perspective. In an era when differing viewpoints often divide us, the ability to see an issue through someone else’s eyes is a skill of immense value.

Jeff shared examples of young people who, through theater, learned to better understand perspectives different from their own. Whether agreement followed or not, the growth in understanding was real. He noted that communities with strong support for the arts are measurably stronger, more vibrant, and more connected.

His challenge to the Lions was simple: Go see something. Get involved. Support the arts. Participate. Our community—and our world—will be better for it.

The Kerrville Host Lions Club was recognized by the MD-2, Council of Governors, stemming from our work to provide relief to the community following the catastrophic Flood of July 4, 2025 along the Guadalupe river. The Flood impacted large portions and the many river towns along the river flowing through Kerr and Kendall Counties.

Through the KHLC Foundation, and the many donors who gave from all over the world, more than $500,000 dollars was distributed and sent back out into the community to provide relief, recovery and resiliency.

Below, the MD-2 State Administrator, Lion Whitney Livingston, presents a plaque to Club president, Lion Danny Dean on behalf of the MD-2 Council of Governors.
