The Kerrville Host Lions Club was recognized by the MD-2, Council of Governors, stemming from our work to provide relief to the community following the catastrophic Flood of July 4, 2025 along the Guadalupe river. The Flood impacted large portions and the many river towns along the river flowing through Kerr and Kendall Counties.

Through the KHLC Foundation, and the many donors who gave from all over the world, more than $500,000 dollars was distributed and sent back out into the community to provide relief, recovery and resiliency.

Below, the MD-2 State Administrator, Lion Whitney Livingston, presents a plaque to Club president, Lion Danny Dean on behalf of the MD-2 Council of Governors.

Today’s program was presented by Sidney Woods, a Tivy High School sophomore involved in the Envision National Youth Leadership Forum for STEM and Medicine and Tivy Robotics.

Sidney gave an impressive presentation on ENYL, the advanced STEM, and robotics opportunities available to students at Tivy, highlighting the technical skills and problem-solving abilities these programs help develop. One of the most memorable moments came when he solved not one, but two Rubik’s Cubes while blindfolded—a remarkable demonstration of focus, memory, and discipline.

We also had the privilege of welcoming our newest member, Lion Kelsey Wilmont, through an induction ceremony. Please join us in extending a warm Lions welcome! 🦁

What a privilege it was for the Kerrville Host Lions Club to serve dinner to the outstanding staff of Texas Lions Camp as they completed their staff training week.

These dedicated young men and women have spent countless hours preparing for a summer of serving children from across Texas, and we were honored to have the opportunity to serve them for an evening.

A special thank you to Lion Mo Poorman for coordinating the event and to all of our club members who volunteered their time to make the evening possible as well as Hungry Dog Roadside Eats; Mr. Scotty Schmerber! It was wonderful to share a meal, fellowship together, and show our appreciation for the incredible work these staff members are preparing to do.

The Texas Lions Camp mission is made possible by people who are willing to serve others, and we are grateful to play a small part in supporting those who will make a lasting impact on the lives of so many campers this summer.

A great meal, great fellowship, and a great evening for all involved. We wish the Texas Lions Camp staff an amazing summer ahead!

Today’s program was presented by Sam Pantusa, President & COO of the Lions Sight Research Foundation in San Antonio. The foundation is recognized for establishing the Lions Sight Research Center at UT Health San Antonio and for operating the Mobile Eye Screening Unit.

Sam delivered an outstanding overview of the foundation’s impact across research, outreach, provision of medical devices and vision conservation efforts serving thousands of Texans. In answering Helen Keller’s challenge for Lions to become “Knights of the Blind,” the Lions Sight Research Center continues to expand access to critical eye care services for those in need.

As if that were not great enough, we also had the distinct privilege of swearing in four (4) new Kerrville Host Lions Club members today: Sicilia White, Vickie Russell, Peggy Sunberg, and Susan Sturgis, each appearing alongside their sponsors. The induction was conducted by PID Mike Butler.

Today’s fascinating program was offered by high ranking members of the US Military, attached to the Adjutant General’s Office.

Brigadier General Tanya Trout gave a fascinating overview of the massive response effort when called to respond to the July 4, 2025 flood. She described the initial response as “Neighbor Helping Neighbor.” She spoke highly about our local first responders who immediately ran toward danger and were already on the ground directing critical resources where they were needed most. She also referred to the military personnel deployed to assist as our “Neighbors in Uniform.”

Next up, Colonel Karim Branford, Director of Operations for the U.S. Military and attached to Task Force 1 Texas, played an integral role in deploying the resources needed during the search and rescue operations that followed the flood.

Col. Branford detailed how agencies and assets from across the state and nation were coordinated to mount the extraordinary response effort that followed.

Wrapping up the presentation, was J3 Command Sgt. Major Jeremy Scribner who shared what it was like when the first reports of the July 4, 2025 tragedy began to unfold. Ironically, he was picking up his own children from an East Texas camp when the alerts started coming in and his phone immediately came to life.

Many of these same resources are currently deployed in the Panhandle fighting wildfires. Quite literally, the sun rarely sets when their operations are not deployed somewhere.

Today’s program featured Leigh Anne Aiken, president of the local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. She shared the organization’s origin—founded when its creators built a bed in their garage for a child in their community—and its mission to eliminate child bedlessness.

She also outlined a local initiative where companies sponsor builds at $250 per bed and host those builds at their own facilities.

Although the organization operates nationally, donations remain in the communities where they are given. Contributions can be made at https://shpbeds.org/.

Today’s program was presented by Teresa Stroud, Superintendent of Kerrville State Hospital, a role she has held since May 2025. She noted that the hospital is one of the largest employers in Kerrville.

Teresa emphasized that Kerrville State Hospital is a forensic facility. Every patient is a ward of the state, having been convicted of a felony and committed by a judge.

She shared that the hospital operates on an annual budget exceeding $69 million and has a capacity of 290 patients. The Kerrville facility does not serve juveniles or children; however, she noted that a new state hospital in Dallas is being developed to accommodate that population.

Mayor Pro tem Brenda Hughes joined us today to deliver a timely and important program on the City of Kerrville’s response to the July 4, 2025 flood.

Her message was clear—“community resiliency has defined Kerrville’s recovery. That strength wasn’t limited to city leadership; it showed up in neighbors stepping up for neighbors across the community.”

“One of the most important aspects of this experience is the evaluation of emergency preparedness,” Brenda said. Hard lessons were learned, and they’re already shaping a stronger, more prepared Kerrville for whatever comes next.

Brenda went on to say, “When the next major weather event arrives—and it will—this community will meet it better equipped, better coordinated, and more resilient than before”. She did not miss the opportunity to thank the Lions Clubs in the area for their considerable contributions made to support the communities recovery.

City Manager, Dalton Rice, was also on hand to lend the weight of his office. Dalton took the opportunity to discuss status of certain specific projects regarding water. Kerr Together has been a natural outflow that will seek to coordinate all resources from NPO’s, NGO’s and Government entities to coordinate local resources. They are currently seeking a coordinator, he said.

KHLC is proud to announce we’ve been awarded a new service project by the county—adopting a two mile stretch of Highway 27 just outside the gates of Texas Lions Camp.

The Club’s first workday kicked off this past Saturday, led by new member Lion Tyler Montgomery, and it set the tone for what this effort is all about: rolling up our sleeves and taking care of the place we call home.

This is just the beginning. If you’ve been looking for a way to make a visible, local impact, this is it.
