We are currently open by appointment only; please call us at (319) 524-3816 to make an appointment. The Keokuk Humane Society is located at 1124 Johnson Street in Keokuk, Iowa. All of our available pets will be altered and have updated vaccinations/medical records before they are even considered for adoption. This does not mean an animal will be fully vaccinated for life: it means they are up-to-d

ate at that time. Home visits/background checks required before any adoptions. If you have lost your pet, it is crucial that you contact every facility in your area as soon as possible to aid in their safe return --- this includes any rescue organizations, veterinary clinics, etc. ------ in the surrounding 25 miles. If you suspect your pet was stolen, contact facilities in the surrounding 50 miles (at least) and contact the authorities. You could also put an add in your local paper, or utilize a platform on social media, or even put up posters in public places to help in the search for your animal. Anything helps; spread the word (and please be as specific as possible)!

Felix found something pretty cool outside our front door this morning, and he is VERY proud of it!!! He says he wishes cats could join the local group so he could share in the fun, too!

Slightly different Cat of the Week situation this week:

Our beautiful Ebby was *supposed* to be this week's candidate, except she was just recently adopted! And we forgot to take her name out of the drawing hat in time... 🤦‍♀️ But she still deserves her moment in the spotlight anyway.

This is not the post we wanted to make this evening but one we have to:

This morning, a pair of loose dogs killed two stray cats on our facility’s property. They have been seen on our property more than once now, so it is reasonable to believe that they will be out again in the future. It is even more unfortunate that they are just a few of the roaming dogs in this community that are quickly getting out of control.

One of the cats killed was Mae, a new mother whom we were coaxing into bringing forth her kittens in the hopes that we could get them all proper care. The second fatality was one of those kittens. At this time, we have no knowledge of what happened to the others and it’s likely that we will now never see them.

As stated above, these two dogs have been seen on our property before, and our camera footage shows that these were *without the shadow of a doubt* intentional killings. It is because of this that we feel the need to warn all pet owners in the Johnson and 13th St./Police Station area about these dogs. There is no question that they will do this again if given the chance.

There is absolutely no excuse for this behavior from any dog. Disliking or even chasing smaller animals is one thing, but actively seeking them out to kill, and to kill in the way that these two did, is completely unacceptable. Behavior like this typically escalates into attacking other large dogs and then people.

And there is even less of an excuse for their owner to have allowed these dogs to roam knowing that they are capable of this. This type of negligence is abnormal and concerning, and does nothing but effect the entire community negatively. How many other animals have been killed by your dogs? How many peoples’ pets have disappeared while your dogs have been out? We only know of these two today because they happened to be caught on our camera; how many more will there have to be before you understand that your negligence has consequences for not just you, but for others that you don't see? Mae and her kittens’ blood are on your hands. Keep your pets contained properly for their safety, if the safety of those around you isn't reason enough. If you cannot properly care for them, please do your best to get them to a home that can. That is your responsibility to them. And that goes for all pet owners. Owners like this should be ashamed of themselves. Owners like this ruin things for everyone.

And as hard as it is to give the benefit of the doubt here; if these are your dogs, and you truly didn’t know what they get up to in their spare time, please reach out to us. We have about 10 minutes of footage you really need to see. Please do your part to ensure this doesn’t happen again. You owe it to Mae and her kittens. ***To clarify, we are not calling for these dogs to be euthanized. They need help before it gets to that point.

For outdoor and indoor/outdoor cat owners reading this, let this be your sign to keep them inside. While we cannot control the actions of other pet owners, we can do our best to keep our own pets safe and out of situations like this. Objectively, the easiest and most efficient way to do that is to keep them inside. There is no way around that. Dog attacks are just scratching the surface of what they go through outside. The world is a lot bigger for cats, and a lot more dangerous because of that. You gamble with their lives every time you let them out the door. Are you prepared to lose that bet?

And of course Mae could have been taken in immediately had she not been nursing kittens. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do we take in the mother immediately at the expense of the kittens? Or allow her to care for them and risk losing them all? We got really close to getting them, at least, because the kitten was found in the rear of our building close to our back door. This is the ugly reality of what happens to countless cats outside every day and a prime example of why spaying and neutering your pets is so very important. You think there are too many cats in Keokuk right now? What if I told you for every cat you see, there is *at minimum* one you don’t? Please spay and neuter your pets. That’s the best way to prevent their needless suffering. I think if just one person reading this decides to keep their pet safe indoors and get it altered, then maybe Mae and her kittens’ deaths wouldn’t have been completely in vain.

LOOKING FOR A HOME:

This is Gabby, a female cat who is approximately 8 years old. She looks a little funny because of her hair cut at the moment, but she is typically a dark gray color. Gabby has spent most of her life in a home with an elderly couple but she is unfortunately now looking for a new home. She’s not used to children or dogs being around her but she has done well with other cats. Gabby has been spayed and is completely up to date on her vaccinations at this time.

Having no idea how she’s found her way to the spotlight this week, we can see our one and only TAFFY slinking around!
Taffy is a gray and white female tabby who’s just celebrated her third birthday last month. With a quiet personality, she might not immediately stand out to people, but Taffy really just likes to get to know you first before she lets loose (and you will find out rather quickly when she does get comfortable). Taffy is very much a ‘lurker’ type cat. In fact, some of her favorite things to do are finding new hiding places to jump out and surprise people. Nearly silent, she’s perfected the art of sneaking behind doors to catch unassuming feet passing by, and Taffy’s all but mastered popping out from under ruffled blankets to bat at hands. Her reserved nature is a coverup for her true feelings; at her core, Taffy is a hunter.
But she gladly busies herself with toys the majority of the time. As indicated by our respondent, Taffy is an incredibly active and determined cat. So, a home with someone willing to throw a mouse or wave a wand toy would be perfect for her. And apart from her hobbies, Taffy does love attention. Though not the *most* demanding type, she makes her presence known by dramatically flopping over next to someone that she wants to pet her. She may also slowly inch closer and paw at a pantleg in an attempt to distract you. And, if Taffy’s truly desperate, she’ll use the most pathetic, sad sounding meow she can muster, hoping that you’ll just pick up that toy and toss it for her. Otherwise, she can be found surrounding herself with her cat friends (of which she has several).
Taffy is overall a well rounded cat. She’d do well in most environments if allowed enough time to adjust. The only things that Taffy has been offput by are loud kids and loud dogs, as well as the box fan we use right after mopping. She has spent her entire life around other cats, so it would be better for her to go to a home with others she can socialize with to keep her entertained. And given that she has a strong prey drive, I would not recommend Taffy to a home with any small animals. If you are looking for an engaging feline friend, Taffy might just be the one you’re looking for!

An unfortunate beginning for this month, our board has lost a furry family member. While it’s always bittersweet to see a muzzle go gray, you just know they’ve enjoyed their golden years with you. Grace, may you spend eternity darting around up there. 🕊️🎾🐕

Featured this week is another one of our younger guys… FELIX!!!

Felix is an approximately 4-5 year old smaller black and white male with a smudge on his face where it looks suspiciously like he tried to wipe his nose. As handsome as he is, Felix is a shy guy—which is really the only reason we can think of for him still being with us—but he does have an adorable personality. With people, he is a true gentleman and a role model for our other cats. He’s quiet, clean, asks for attention politely by putting a paw on your arm or a light headbutt, and he’s even good about not knocking too many things off the counter when he’s up there. Speaking of Felix being on the counter…
He’s always up there. Watching. Lurking. One could argue that the counter is Felix’ happy place. This is because of the sink. While we have featured bathtub dwellers in the past, I do believe this is the first time we’ve ever shown a cat who loves sinks quite as much as Felix does. His second favorite activity (after getting shoulder scratches) is sitting in or next to the sink while someone is attempting to do the dishes. And this is where his manners really shine through, because where other cats outright demand attention, Felix prefers to gently remind people of his presence just by keeping a paw in contact with your arm. So, if you’re in need of some emotional support while you do dishes every day, I think Felix might just be right for you.
While he is typically an upstanding guy, Felix does have a mischievous side that he gives in to every so often. He is prone to roughhousing with larger male cats (even though he knows he can’t win the fight), which is something to keep in mind should you consider taking him into your home. Because of his timid nature, he is also not the biggest fan of boisterous children. Otherwise, he’s great with other cats and well behaved dogs. He plays well, he loves to be in your lap and in your space, and he loves to supervise from the sink.
