Keokuk Humane Society You can donate through Chewy now, https://www.chewy.com/g/keokuk-humane-society_b102927772 Thanks!!! Adoption fees vary by animal.

We are currently open by appointment only; please call us at (319) 524-3816 to make an appointment. The Keokuk Humane Society is located at 1124 Johnson Street in Keokuk, Iowa. All of our available pets will be altered and have updated vaccinations/medical records before they are even considered for adoption. This does not mean an animal will be fully vaccinated for life: it means they are up-to-d

ate at that time. Home visits/background checks required before any adoptions. If you have lost your pet, it is crucial that you contact every facility in your area as soon as possible to aid in their safe return --- this includes any rescue organizations, veterinary clinics, etc. ------ in the surrounding 25 miles. If you suspect your pet was stolen, contact facilities in the surrounding 50 miles (at least) and contact the authorities. You could also put an add in your local paper, or utilize a platform on social media, or even put up posters in public places to help in the search for your animal. Anything helps; spread the word (and please be as specific as possible)!

LOOKING FOR A HOME:
This cat is not currently in our facility, please see the number listed below.

This is Gabby, a female cat who is approximately 8 years old. She looks a little funny because of her hair cut at the moment, but she is typically a dark gray color. Gabby has spent most of her life in a home with an elderly couple but she is unfortunately now looking for a new home. She’s not used to children or dogs being around her but she has done well with other cats. Gabby has been spayed and is completely up to date on her vaccinations at this time.

If you think Gabby could be a good fit for your family, please contact Ryanne at (319) 795-6830. Thank you!

Having no idea how she’s found her way to the spotlight this week, we can see our one and only TAFFY slinking around!
Taffy is a gray and white female tabby who’s just celebrated her third birthday last month. With a quiet personality, she might not immediately stand out to people, but Taffy really just likes to get to know you first before she lets loose (and you will find out rather quickly when she does get comfortable). Taffy is very much a ‘lurker’ type cat. In fact, some of her favorite things to do are finding new hiding places to jump out and surprise people. Nearly silent, she’s perfected the art of sneaking behind doors to catch unassuming feet passing by, and Taffy’s all but mastered popping out from under ruffled blankets to bat at hands. Her reserved nature is a coverup for her true feelings; at her core, Taffy is a hunter.
But she gladly busies herself with toys the majority of the time. As indicated by our respondent, Taffy is an incredibly active and determined cat. So, a home with someone willing to throw a mouse or wave a wand toy would be perfect for her. And apart from her hobbies, Taffy does love attention. Though not the *most* demanding type, she makes her presence known by dramatically flopping over next to someone that she wants to pet her. She may also slowly inch closer and paw at a pantleg in an attempt to distract you. And, if Taffy’s truly desperate, she’ll use the most pathetic, sad sounding meow she can muster, hoping that you’ll just pick up that toy and toss it for her. Otherwise, she can be found surrounding herself with her cat friends (of which she has several).
Taffy is overall a well rounded cat. She’d do well in most environments if allowed enough time to adjust. The only things that Taffy has been offput by are loud kids and loud dogs, as well as the box fan we use right after mopping. She has spent her entire life around other cats, so it would be better for her to go to a home with others she can socialize with to keep her entertained. And given that she has a strong prey drive, I would not recommend Taffy to a home with any small animals. If you are looking for an engaging feline friend, Taffy might just be the one you’re looking for!

A word from one of our volunteers:
"Taffy is a very shy cat. Once she warms up to you, she likes to be petted. She loves to play. She will not rest until she catches whatever she’s going after!” -Aerys, 12

The sooner you walk through our front door, the sooner Taffy will jump out and introduce herself, so please call us at (319) 524-3816 and set up an appointment to see her! An interview will be held before you are given an application; and once said application is approved, our adoption fee is $100, which includes a cat’s spay/neuter, current vaccinations, and a microchip. We do not facilitate same day adoptions. Taffy is slinking around waiting for you to throw that toy!

An unfortunate beginning for this month, our board has lost a furry family member. While it’s always bittersweet to see a muzzle go gray, you just know they’ve enjoyed their golden years with you. Grace, may you spend eternity darting around up there. 🕊️🎾🐕

Featured this week is another one of our younger guys… FELIX!!!

Felix is an approximately 4-5 year old smaller black and white male with a smudge on his face where it looks suspiciously like he tried to wipe his nose. As handsome as he is, Felix is a shy guy—which is really the only reason we can think of for him still being with us—but he does have an adorable personality. With people, he is a true gentleman and a role model for our other cats. He’s quiet, clean, asks for attention politely by putting a paw on your arm or a light headbutt, and he’s even good about not knocking too many things off the counter when he’s up there. Speaking of Felix being on the counter…
He’s always up there. Watching. Lurking. One could argue that the counter is Felix’ happy place. This is because of the sink. While we have featured bathtub dwellers in the past, I do believe this is the first time we’ve ever shown a cat who loves sinks quite as much as Felix does. His second favorite activity (after getting shoulder scratches) is sitting in or next to the sink while someone is attempting to do the dishes. And this is where his manners really shine through, because where other cats outright demand attention, Felix prefers to gently remind people of his presence just by keeping a paw in contact with your arm. So, if you’re in need of some emotional support while you do dishes every day, I think Felix might just be right for you.
While he is typically an upstanding guy, Felix does have a mischievous side that he gives in to every so often. He is prone to roughhousing with larger male cats (even though he knows he can’t win the fight), which is something to keep in mind should you consider taking him into your home. Because of his timid nature, he is also not the biggest fan of boisterous children. Otherwise, he’s great with other cats and well behaved dogs. He plays well, he loves to be in your lap and in your space, and he loves to supervise from the sink.

Felix is patiently waiting for you to start on those dishes, so please call us at (319) 524-3816 to set up an appointment to meet him! An interview will be held before you are given an application and once said application is approved, our adoption fee is $100, which includes a cat’s spay/neuter, current vaccinations, and a microchip. We do not facilitate same day adoptions. Be sure to stay where he can see you!

This week we have none other than Blue, a five year old all back female with a faint patch of white on her chest, who is truly honored to be a favorite among our volunteers. Though she is unfortunately the last of her original friend group to be here, Blue has maintained an optimistic outlook and is often considered to be the heart of the Right Side Cat Room. Typically one of the first to greet people, she is always elated to find new friends and playmates.
Now, the 'playmates' part is very important here; because Blue is another one of our athletes. A connoisseur of cat toys, it feels like every toy she finds is more entertaining than the last. But the ones she enjoys the most are the teaser toys that seem to just fly through the air like birds (which Blue is also fond of watching). Sadly, Blue is far from our most agile hunter; but she is a proud hunter nonetheless. Another one of her favorite targets are shoelaces (but totally not because they're easy for her to catch).
As mentioned by our respondent, Blue loves to get around and be close to her people. While most cats like to sit in laps, Blue has always been more of a shoulder dweller. For people sitting in our Right Side Room longer than five minutes, it isn't uncommon to feel paws poking at your back, and later her climbing up for a seat. Sometimes it really feels like there's a parrot in our building despite her incessant meowing. And, if you have longer hair, Blue may even try to help style it for you.
Although Blue is not picky about who she plays with, she does prefer more well-mannered people. Blue was raised around other cats, so she does well with almost all she meets, and in addition has gotten along with polite dogs in the past. Given her playful nature, a home with smaller pets would not be recommended for Blue.

A word from one of our volunteers:
"Blue is my favorite cat in the Right Side Cat Room. She is so sweet. She likes to jump on peoples' backs. And if you bring out a toy and wave it high in the air, she will stand on her hind legs and jump in the air and try to get it! -Aerys, 11

Blue would love for you to come play with her, so please call us at (319) 524-3816 to set up an appointment! Following an approved application, our adoption fee is $100, which includes a cat’s spay/neuter, current vaccinations, and a microchip. We do not facilitate same day adoptions. If you wear laced shoes, Blue is sure to be on the prowl!

A little late, but its fashionable because its Finn whose won the lottery this week!

Finn (short for Griffin) is an approximately five year old all gray tabby with charming green eyes and long, long whiskers. As mentioned by our respondent, he is of larger stature, but that really just means he's a better than average lap cat. A bit standoffish at the first meeting, Finn is typically quick to warm up to people, though this may have something to do with him being particularly susceptible to bribery (the comestible kind, if you know what I mean). Should you be willing to satiate his appetite, Finn will happily be your best little buddy. Trailing after his favorite people is a staple past-time of Finn's, and he is also very vocal about his needs as your buddy. Finn always finds himself front and center on the counter to demand your full attention.
Our respondent also hinted at his more playful nature. Finn is what we tend to refer to as a 'love-biter.' Dangling your fingers in front of him will result in a lighthearted nip. Brushing him instead of petting usually ends with Finn hugging and gnawing on your arm in retaliation. And doing the dishes while neglecting him is also normally enough to entice Finn to take a nibble of your arm. Other times, he likes to just hold a finger with his teeth until you give in. Its his go to attention grabber, and it does work for him in most cases. He is always very gentle while teething people, but Finn also really clamps down on his toys to show off his strength. He is fond of playing tug-of-war using his toys with people.
Most notable is his bright personality. Finn is very much the type to chime in and give his two cents on whatever you're doing, whether he's being helpful or not. It doesn't matter if you're doing the dishes or running all over the building; Finn has something to say about it, and he will do his very best to be heard. His ideal home would be with someone willing to bend to his whims (though still strong enough to hold back on the treats) and listen to him. Having many high places where he can be more easily heard is also recommended.

A word from one of our volunteers:
"Finn is such a nice boy. He's kinda chunky, though. If you're wearing gloves when you pet him, he will try to bite them!" -Aerys, 11

Finn would love to do a t̵a̵s̵t̵e̵ ̵t̵e̵s̵t̵ meet and greet with you, so please call us at (319) 524-3816 to set up an appointment to see him! Following an approved application, our adoption fee is $100, which includes an cat’s spay/neuter, current vaccinations, and a microchip. We do not facilitate same day adoptions. Finn is looking forward to seeing what you bribe him with!
