My night is “otterly” perfect seeing this one in the same general area several times this week.

Could it be a female with babies in the den just waiting to explore❣️

❤️ We have someone heading out there now❤️

🆘 Slidell Peeps 🆘

Do we have anyone in Slidell who can simply pick up a box of 2 squirrels that were left outside and just keep them warm until tomorrow? Northam Ct is the road

The finder lives in another state and knew it was not legal to cross state lines so left them in a box.

Please text:call me at 337-319-9855 if you can go get them and hold them.
I have a video showing the exact location of where they are for whoever can help.

Did you know that it’s not safe to ever hang or carry opossums by the tail?

In the wild, they don’t hang from the tail, but do use their tails for stability/balance, carrying nesting materials, and even while swimming❣️

It’s slowed down to better see the tail wrap around the branch.

Hope, our squirrel from November, has found her freedom and it is so well earned. She overcame so many odds with time. Not all cases end with amazing results like hers.

She will continue going in and out while she builds her own drey or takes up a squirrel box already out there. We will supplement inside the cage to help her until she finds her way and works on her stashing.
She was an adult when she came into care, but releasing back where she was is not an option since she was attacked by the family dog.

Miwi (named by finder) our adult male from New Orleans, is battling a systemic infection causing multiple abscesses to rupture.
We were advised to stack another med since he had already received an injection following his surgery.

He is very vocal to me when I try to give his disgusting meds, put in eye drops, and applying topicals on all the wounds. He is trying so hard to stay upright. He has lost some weight since he doesnt feel well and we are having to supplement feed.

I am giving it a few days. If the second med doesn’t work quickly, I will request a culture for sensitivity.

He is a fighter, but I am truly not sure he will overcome this battle. The amount of puss oozing from so many wounds means it’s pretty widespread systemically.

This was in our personal pond with the string still attached. Our pond is used by so many wildlife and had I not noticed it today, it could have wrapped around any of the numerous mammals that use it overnight.

Please remember how harmful they are to the Environment, power lines, wildlife, and livestock to name a few.

The information below is copied and pasted directly from the Baton Rouge Audubon Society, but only so that I was able to use my own photos from today. Please go follow them for updates.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

As I mentioned yesterday, the balloon ban bill is back! Rep. John Illg has filed HB851, which prohibits the intentional outdoor release of lighter than air balloons by persons over the age of sixteen unless the release is for a valid scientific or educational purpose, is a weather balloon, or is a hot air balloon that is recovered after launch, and provides civil penalties in the form of a fine for violators. HB 851 contains the same language as the bill passed last year but vetoed by Governor Landry. Rep. Illg has reportedly received an assurance from Governor Landry that he will not veto the bill this year if it passes. The legislative session opens March 9, and the bill has provisionally been referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources and Environment. Since it is enforced with a fine, it is deemed a revenue measure, which means it requires the support of 2/3 of each house.

Balloon releases are a particularly egregious form of litter because what goes up must eventually come down, with catastrophic consequences for birds, fish, and other wildlife. Richard Condrey, Baton Rouge Audubon Society conservation chair, has been active for many years trying to address this issue, and BRAS supports this initiative. The bill is backed by the Lt. Governor's office, and the Louisiana Wildlife Federation is also backing the bill and monitoring its progress. The fact that last year's bill finally passed the house 98-0 and the senate 33-1 means nothing--it is a good start, but this is a brand new year.

If you wish to contact your legislator to support this critical piece of pro-wildlife, anti-pollution legislation, here are a few pertinent facts you may wish to share in your email, letter, or phone call:

1. Balloons negatively impact the environment by littering lakes, streams, and beaches. It is basically the same as intentionally throwing trash into the ocean or the ground.

2. Even balloons marketed as biodegradable or eco-friendly can still take years to disintegrate. This means that they are not better for the environment than standard balloons.

3. When balloons make their way into the water, their floating pieces and tattered ends can resemble jellyfish or other sea life that is consumed by marine animals like fish, sea turtles, and dolphins. When the pieces of latex or Mylar are mistaken for food and are ingested, they can get lodged in the digestive tract, inhibiting the animal's ability to eat, and it can cause a slow and painful death by starvation.

4. Wildlife can also fall victim to balloons and its strings when the pieces fall to the ground or onto bushes and trees. Birds have been found injured with ribbons wrapped around their wings or beaks, and have strangled themselves when they become entangled in strings that are attached to power lines and trees. And just like marine animals, they can succumb to a painful death after ingesting balloons.

5. Entergy Louisiana has raised alarms about Mylar balloons, which are metallic and can cause dangerous electrical surges or outages when they contact power lines or transformers. A high-profile outage occurred in New Orleans in August 2024, when a Mylar balloon caused a power flicker at a water treatment plant, leading to a boil water advisory for nearly 370,000 residents.

6. The negative impact on animals and the environment prompted the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and local chapters of the National Audubon Society to urge people to stop releasing balloons and instead find alternatives that are more humane and those that are safer for animals and the planet.

7. It is currently illegal to release balloons in California, Connecticut, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, and Maryland. Several cities in the U.S and abroad have also passed laws regarding mass balloon releases after years of witnessing their effects.

This Bobcat was tucked down hiding but ended up running off (you can see the eyes) when the opossum walked on up like he owned that area!

World Wildlife Day❣️

I am so blessed and honored to be a part of Wildlife Rehabilitation in this State with amazing Vet staff behind us.

Seeing the eyes of a defeated animal come into care and get that second chance is an honor I will never take for granted. For the ones who aren’t as lucky, they often let go after knowing they are safe, warm, cleaned and a full belly, and they are deserving of that respect from us.

03/02/2026

✅Update: Appt is at 10:45 this morning

We are waiting for the Vet to get an appointment and get this little one in. Milky white is often a sign of pain and he does have one eye producing it. He is unable to get up but does have feeling in tail and legs and will utilize his arms to hold the syringe when feeding.

It’s 45 minutes to the Vet one way, plus the Vet visit itself. Every penny helps and is appreciated beyond words.

Please consider making a small difference on this Monday.

Last night we were notified about an injured squirrel. Once we confirmed we were minutes away, it was put at the door in a very secure box so that civilian calls and the injured squirrel were taken care of. Super thankful.

He is a little male juvenile weighing in at 310g. He has a few small wounds, mouth and two paws, and a chunk of ear missing with rips in the other one. He is unable to stand or lift his head and will only go to the left on his belly. He does have feeling in both legs and his tail.

This little one has a battle to overcome. Head tilts this severe do not always recover. We will do all we can with medications and time for small improvements to be made.

❤️All of our links to donate and our Amazon list is in the comments.

Hope, the squirrel, still has not found the escape hatch She is exploring everywhere, but that corner.

Today I will get a step stool and add a bowl near the opening that I can take down at night not to attract other potential predators, yet entice her to get a little closer.

Our New Orleans raccoon with the head trauma and amputated toe has been named “Miwi” by his finders.

Six days later, he has actually gotten up and drinking on his own. I was having to hand feed, syringe fluids or hold a bowl and his head.

We are still seeing neurological symptoms but they are slowly improving. He no longer has nystagmus AND he most definitely growls warnings. He can’t walk but is partially sitting.

As always, we are very guarded, but optimistic❣️
