During Region 1’s spring break, the Kent Conservation Commission partnered with Kent Memorial Library for a hands-on science program all about batteries, electricity, and circuits for children in PreK–3rd grade! Thanks to Commissioner Carol Franken for imagining this program and making it a reality!

Participants explored how electricity works by creating simple circuits, testing conductors and insulators, and using voltmeters to discover whether batteries still had power left. Learning came alive through interactive demonstrations and activities that made science both fun and memorable.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this engaging STEM program at the library!

The Kent Conservation Commission and Kent Garden Club were proud to celebrate the annual Kent Center School tradition by planting a lovely native flowering dogwood tree this year for Mr. Chris, a beloved KCS volunteer in honor of Arbor Day.

Each year, we come together to plant a tree with Kent Center School students—alternating between the KCS campus and community locations within walking distance of the school. This special tradition helps students connect with nature while learning the importance of trees, stewardship, and caring for the environment.

Native dogwoods are a beautiful part of our local landscape, offering stunning spring blossoms, vibrant fall color, and important food and habitat for birds and pollinators. Trees like this help strengthen our environment while adding beauty for generations to come. Thank you to Kent Center School for continuing this meaningful Arbor Day celebration, and to everyone who helps keep this tradition growing year after year (especially Jos Spellbos.) Together, we are planting roots for the future. 🌳🌸
